    SOLD

Hey fellow rimfire shooters. I've been shooting .22 and .17HMR for several years but only in rifle form. I'd like to buy my very first .22 pistol, and considering the nature of .22s, I'd like it to be something special. I want a "keepsake" kind of pistol. Something I can hang on to for a long time. Something I can use to teach newbies how to shoot, and one day, years from now, teach my kids how to shoot. And just maybe pass it on to them so they can enjoy it the way I will. I'm sure you all know the type of keepsake I'm talking about.

I'm not necessarily looking for bells and whistles. I don't need a high polish finish, jeweled bolt, match grade barrel, etc. Just something serviceable that will last a looooooong time. Like the proverbial "Grandaddy's gun."

Where do I begin with pistol shopping? I know nothing about rimfire pistols. Nothing.

    Suggestions?

Also, I have a residence in Arizona so I'm not constrained by the roster. Sorry guys

Edit: I'm open to both revolvers and pistols. The most important things for me are longevity and reliability. If that ends up being a revolver, then so be it.

Several Rugers come to mind: Single Six, SP101-22lr, 22/45 (or a Mark III).

Rimfirecentral.com is a great resource, lots of info on specific models there.

A Browning Challenger that you bought new in 1966. Not sure which grandson gets it but the other one gets the Browning SA rifle I bought the same day.

                  Browning 1911-22, Buckmark
                  Ruger Mk1,2,3, 22/45
                  Smith 17, 34, 41

Personally I think the 191-22 is it.

Thanks for the suggestions and the discussion, everyone. Keep em coming.

I obviously have a lot of research to do, but how do we all feel about the Smith & Wesson 617 that's been mentioned several times? Is it built to the same quality/standards as their centerfire revolvers? I know Smith revolvers are pretty legendary for quality, trigger pull, etc. A nice revolver might be just the ticket.

The PPK .22 that came out recently is kind of classy.

Now the question is, do you want a revolver or a semi-automatic?

If you're curious about the 617, which is a worthwhile gun to be curious about, there are a number of video reviews available if you look around online. While the spoken content of some may not be of the highest quality, there are some decent glamor shots and shooting footage that might help inform your decision.
