Need Help With This Pressurized Coke Bottle Target

Been trying to make some simple home made reaction targets, (for the young guys I take shooting), that aren't a fire hazard or don't involve chemicals etc---I came across this vid and it seemed perfect except that I couldn't get it to work.

I can't get this to work---I made mine exactly like in the vid but it doesn't work for me?, (tried at least 6 different ways)---Cap and valve stem are air tight, no air leaking---I pump up with bicycle pump to 65-70psi, (he says he only did 50psi)---Go about 15/20 yards away and shoot with .22 rifle using high velocity ammo---It does nothing---The bullet just goes right through and bottle just sits there---No noise, nothing just a clean hole in one side and out the other---Would really like to get this to work---Any ideas.

He shot it with an air cannon. Projectile was large and shreded the bottle. You used a 22 rimfire zipped right through. Try a larger caliber going slower.

We only take out .22's---I have some CCI standard velocity which is about 1080---If I go about 30 yards, do you think that will work---I really want to make this work cause I wasted my time making about 25 of these valve stemmed caps for these guys

Best you can do is a 12ga slug at 25 yards. Need to start a tear pattern.

Try filling one partially with water. It should absorb more energy and give your kids more to see when it blows up.

I did em with water and without but the .22 just flies right through it.

I made the exact bottles about 20 years ago. We shot them with .22s and BB guns. They made a real nice pop. I don't know what pressure I filled the bottles to. I just filled them until I felt the may blow up on me. I used a compressor not a bicycle pump.

                  Here is the formula:

1/4 full of water with a little vingar.
Add some baking soda, screw on cap quickly.
                  Optional: food coloring.

                  Then shoot.

Vingar + baking soda in closed container= pressurized CO2.
As always: wear safety glasses, recycle

That's what I did when I went to AZ last year. Didn't have any targets so I just stopped by the gas station on the way to the shooting spot and picked up a few twelve packs.

Fun and easy to clean up.

Believe it or not, you probably need to read California's Penal Code. While what you are proposing seems safe, it may violate Ca law. Do you really want a felony conviction for doing something like this? Dry ice or baking soda bombs will land you in prison. If you want simple and inexpensive reactive targets, go buy a couple sacks of potatoes and some bright colored spray paint.

Illegal, and it will blow up the bottle on it's own.

Little cheaper than coke, but if I'm in an area where its acceptable to do so, I'll shoot charcoal. They go poof when you shoot 'em. Just remember to pack it out if you packed it in.
