Yes. Cmmg is the most popular in its cheaper price bracket. They are better now than years ago but still not without potential problems.

2 others to consider that are in a higher tier of quality and price would be the Nordic components nc-22 or the JP enterprises JP-22. Both will out shoot and outperform the cmmg but you also pay more for that luxury.

What do you recommend and what should I avoid.

Can't be mil spec since the mil doesn't have a spec for a 22lr AR. I have a JP stainless barrel 22lr upper that can shoot wings off flies, dumped the tacsol when I got that

I want to try a replicate my AR .223 as close as possible and use the AR .22 for training with a less expensive round.

That's my 'aim' too. That's why I use the same gun for both, a mil-spec AR-15 with a .22LR bolt put in. Same gun, more fun. When .22LR is expensive or rare, 17 cent .223 reloads take over with a standard BCG.

My other reason is Daniel Defense doesn't make a .22LR barrel.

A conversion BCG will generally give you 2" at 50 yards which is adequate for steel training. Most L.E. work is 50 yards and under.

Worked great on my DD M4.

But based on my recent experience at WallyWorld, it's easier and cheaper to get .223 than .22 these days.

My kids keep "borrowing" our family .22s and while we have .22 levers, pump, marlins and bolt Rifles....I decided to build a dedicated AR .22 rifle that will always be a .22 Rifle.

I did much google research and talked to some rimfire nuts (sorry for being redundant.. ) and the name Tactical Solutions came up.

Tactical Solutions has a crappy website. Real crappy. This is my opinion.

I decided I didn't want a AR heavy Rifle that runs .22. I want something lighter weight and handy. So I decided to get the tactical Solutions 12 inch aluminum
Type barrel with a shroud that meets the 16 inch length.

Very light weight. Not that it matters here in California but this set up will run a suppressor that actually slides down inside that cage and screws on to the barrel. (The end of the 12 inch barrel is threaded just like a normal AR barrel without the thread protector or flash hider. Very cool)


Here's mine that I picked up yesterday. I will build up one of my lowers and because she's .22 I plan on finding a folding stock (suggestions?) to keep her at 26 inches while folded.

Why the barrel shroud? Here's an explanation.


I wanted to use my Tactical Solutions Cascade suppressor. I love a suppressed rifle, and the cascade does an excellent job of muffling the sound from a rimfire rifle. To keep from ending up with a twenty-two inch long barrel, which I did not want, I went with the SBX barrel. The SBX is a very clever design. It is basically a 12.5 inch barrel with an integral shroud for the Cascade suppressor. This allows the use of a removable suppressor, without having to register the rifle as a Short Barreled Rifle (SBR) with the federal government, await their approval, and pay the two hundred dollar government extortion fee. The suppressor rides within the barrel extension shroud, with just enough beyond the barrel to easily grasp.

Of course this conversation is moot here in California. But we can dream.....haha.

Those are cool but I would just get a dedicated 22 rifle. Seems more cost effective. Also more guns!!!

You could always add a cheap lower later and it make it dedicated...

I have a CMMG pencil barreled AR22 upper. I added a poly lower to to save another 8 ounces. I wouldn't buy another poly but I am glad I have the one. I just want one of everything. If you get the complete poly lowers, the entire trigger assembly needs replacing because the poly hammer is too fat for the .22 upper. Luckily I had my old milspec parts from my CMC upgrade that dropped right into the NFA. Another alternative is to add the thinner New Frontier blowback hammer ($10) - but that's poly too.

Those poly lowers are cool for .22's but plastic safety selector and trigger parts are not cool. I like the way mine is configured and it is super light and reliable. If I want to enjoy that CMC trigger with .22 upper I can always pin it to my rifle lower.

I had a India cmmg bolt but decided to sell it for a dedicated cmmg upper.
From what I read and in this thread cmmg and tac sol make the best uppers.
