So I bought my first .22 LR firearm.

I've never owned a .22, and actually, I've never shot one either. I've always been one for more, oh how does one put it... Better calibers. Well that's not PC in the slightest, is it?

Anywho I was walking about my various LGS and I spied a smallish rifle on the used shelf. So I got to talking to the counter jockey and as it turns out DuPont used to own Remington arms, and in the interest of producing a highly economical rifle they donated their Structural Material Zytel 101 (Nylon 66 for the rest of us) to produce the rifle that bears the same name (Nylon 66, not Zytel 101).

Turns out this is one of the first civilian weapons to utilize polymers in its construction and boy, did they mean it! The barrel and bolt are metal, as well as a cover to make the receiver appear to be made of steel when it is in fact, Nylon! The thing is on my brain now, so does anyone have any experience with them? Internet logic says never to clean them as they are a pain but I'm ignoring that one off the bat.

It does have a scope mount, but that is on a sheet metal cover bolted onto a plastic receiver so I'm not so sure a scope will help unless it has a lot of horizontal travel.

Loved my old 66 and have regretted selling it ever since I did. They are accurate and very reliable with good ammo..I waited too long to replace it and the prices have gone too high for me now..

I bought one of the standard 66's in "Mohawk Brown". An "Apache Black" is still available but the "Seneca Green" I wanted was gone by the time I scraped up the cash, sadly.

They are very plastic-y, but in such a way that it's kind of great. It actually looks and feels like a pellet gun, which in a way isn't a bad thing. Weighs next to nothing.

I hear they're sensitive to being rested or used with a sling, as that will cause the stock to flex rather noticeably. On the other hand not much can go wrong with them and they look rather good.

And I agree with the brown looking the best, but there's something about the Seneca Green... Basically I want one just because other people want them and that makes it more desirable, because groupthink.

Plenty are available online (they did make over a million of them) but prices range anywhere from $150 (opening bid) to $500.

This brings back memories. I learned to shoot with a Mohawk Brown Remington 66. I killed many steel soda cans with that rifle. Geez, I am old.

I would skip that and get a Ruger 10/22. Mags, spare parts, and other aftermarket parts easily available.

It was my first gun (Christmas gift) back in the 60's. Loved it! Very accurate and very light. Durable and fun to shoot. I was crushed when it was stolen in a break-in in the 70's. Still wish I had it. I have a lot of .22's, but still think the Nylon 66 was my favorite. Although that may be nostalgia talking. Your first is always the best.

From what I heard, the Nylon 66's are pretty highly regarded.

I've got a Model 10C (mag fed), that I picked, up missing a few pieses, for dirt. $25 bucks worth of parts, and she's runnin' fine. I'd always wanted one, but never got around to getting one when they were cheap. PAX

They are not better calibers.Simply bigger.

Current ammo situation is not normal.For all around fun .22LR is it.

22 lr is a most pleasant caliber to shoot. probably my favorite.
