    22/45 Extractor?

Took both of my new 22/45 to the range yesterday. The 4.5" slabside is sweet. The removable grip 5.5" Target jammed once or twice each magazine. 7 different magazines, 3 different ammos. Same results.

Not a classic "stovepipe." The bolt went far enough back to strip a fresh round but the round would get tangled up in the spent case that got left in the receiver. Bent the fresh round so I couldn't use it, too.

Sure seems like the extractor is slipping off the spent case & leaving it in the receiver. I'll be ordering up a couple VQ parts tomorrow unless somebody has a better idea.

I know Ruger would hook me up but I'd rather avoid mailing the thing off if I can.

EDIT: I THOUGHT I'd seen this topic recently. Getting old sucks.

Volquartsen extractor and it will be fixed. The factory extractor just sucks, doesnt hold the empty case well enough for the ejector to kick it out properly.

Maybe try swapping the whole bolt from one to the other? Then if the slabside jams instead of the target you know it's probably a bad extractor, or at least you isolate it to the bolt. Check and make sure the ejector isn't loose or bent. Assuming these are both Mark III, check that the loaded chamber indicator moves in and out easily with a light push.

I'm just gonna order up 2 VQ extractors & do both. The slabside did FTE once in 50 rounds or so. My older 22/45 has been 100% out of the box with everything I've fed it.

My 22/45 MKIII (Older Model/No grips) extractor was fine/so-so out the box, but upgraded to a VQ Exact Edge Extractor anyways because I bought it as a spare part during my 10 day wait. Runs like a sewing machine, I can definitely tell the difference in performance.

Ruger will generally send you parts that cost under $10 for free
I'd say no questions asked but they always ask you if you are a resident of the USA...

I use their online submission system.

That being said the MK extractor is the same as the 10/22 one so there are lots of replacement options out there

I use stock ones myself but if I had to upgrade I'd probably go with Tactical Solutions..

Heres a good review of the most common ones:

One glance at the business end of my new 22/45 ruger brand extractor & I knew I'd never use it. VQ Firing pin, extractor, trigger & sear. Flawless so far.
Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!

Curious about the reason for replacing the firing pin. I know the factory one is a cheap stamped piece, but does it really cause problems? I've had 2 rounds not go off out of over 6000 in my 22/45, and I gave up on those rounds after rotating them and putting 3 good strikes on each one.

I have several VQ pins for 10/22's. The way I look at it is why not! I know for a fact there was a burr on the stock firing pin. I didn't need the VQ trigger/sear, firing pin/extractor, Wolff springs, TK disconnect/LCI or anything else either! But I wanted it & I'm happy! I just added a Dawson front sight & a Hogue grip too.

The FP can make a difference. I'd read about 10/22's loose FP causing fliers on the first round of a magazine & kind of pooh poohed it until I did some ammo testing on several targets. Almost every 20 round target had 1 or 2 fliers at 11 o'clock. Supposedly the VQ is positioned more precisely and consistently.

Crosspinning the bolt stops the firing pin from bouncing on 10/22's. That helps prevent flyers & keeps the force focused on hitting the pin at the proper depth. On the 22/45 pin, the VQ part is .004 longer. I know mine sure makes a nice deep strike, unlike most I've seen. I need to shoot my mk111 again, last time out was about sighting in a .308 & when finished, simply putting rounds thru my new mk111. Sure is a fun pistol!!!

Interesting about the 10/22 flyers I get those with mine sometimes. I just picked up a 22/45 hoping to break her in today.

Got my extractors Friday. About 20 minutes start to finish to replace one. I love YouTube!

Went to the range today & went through 50 each of Federal, Golden Bullet & M22 bulk. Had one FTE about round 30 & the last 120 rds without a hiccup. I believe I can probably call the one hiccup cheap ammo related.

The Ruger extractor that came out looked like one big burr. What a POS...

The new Volquartsen extractor was a smart choice, did my 22/45 best thing I ever did.
