Hell 5.56 was .02/.03rd till slick willy occupied the chair.
Ahh...the good 'ol days when surplus was o'plenty & a fun day of NFA could be had to the tune of ~50 bucks...(M16/couple thou rds +/-. YMMV)

Even back in '00/'02 it was about $5 a brick. by '07 it was about $10...U get the picture.
This is the direct result of endless printing of monopoly money.(and in high gear now!)
It'll only get worse...so when U find it cheap, stackin' it deep will ensure your ability to keep plinkin' in the future...

Funny I have friends that can recite, on demand, detailed stats of their favorite players/teams and projections of future probability but,
'sigh', don't/won't/refuse to understand the rudimentary aspects of the paper in their pocket. (What really matters.)

Thanks for the trip down memory lane and the brief smile it brought with it....
(Yes I'm an ol' fart now.)

What are you talking about? 2000/2002 5$ bricks of .22? If that's what you're saying, you are delusional.
Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!

Wow I had no idea how dusty my ammo safe was. Some of this stuff goes back two or three weeks ;-)

More interesting than the price was there were fewer gun stores (true dedicated to only gun stores) back then than today because they could never compete with everyone else selling guns at the corner markets.

I remember as a kid at the ACE hardware store down the street looking at the WWII surplus and of course my favorite was the M1 carbine in with the Maxwell Smart/KAOS folding stock with forward grip which I swore I would own one day and it was mixed in with the camping supplises

You could buy from the Sears catalog, my local Bait shop had barrels of Martinis at $10 each (the ones you neither shook nor stirred), ammo was never a concern and not a topic of conversation other than for its accuracy, I could bring my 22 rifle to school and check it in at the principles office so after school my friends and I could ride our bikes into the hills and shoot things, and then 1968 came along with the most effective anti-gunner of them all named Sirhan Sirhan and he had to use a gun to shoot a guy named Kennedy.

Even 10 years ago times were still good for ammo with 22 at $10 a brick on sale, and those South African battle packs were just to cool ($30-300rd pack 5.56, $15-140 for 7.72).

I suppose 20 years from now we will look back at those $100 Mosins, $250 Swiss precision made rifles, $90 sardines for 7.62x54r, the explosion of everything named AR (=AMERICA's RIFLE) and so on.

But the one truth is every year the pickings get slimmer and slimmer less and less affordable. The gungrabbers no longer say they want your guns or ammo like in the past, just that the ammo can not be lead, or steel-because it is armor piercing, or hollow point-because its to deadly....and guns need microstamps, owners must have only government approved safes, owners can only take them out of the safe when going to the gun ranges that do not exist because it is to noisy for the neighbors, guns need to have and GPS notifies the LE shot spotter everytime it is fired, and so on. But of course none of these laws apply to the Governement or PMC's that work for government. I always wonder why we let LE use unsafe pistols that are not CA approved and if any firearm needs microstamping where it would do the most good it would be on LE firearms as that would help protect both LE and the public by preserving the truth.

But hey, remember your the one that started this thread and got me going!

Pretty much...that's about .02 per round! I was getting it for less than that in the 90's!

No kidding. $2.99 boxes of Federal .223 at Wild Sports, $1.99 a box surplus 556, $40 cans of 7.62x54, .22 in every Walmart, $6 a box 9mm, $8 .45, etc... I learned to shoot on those prices or lower, so it was easier to shoot thousands of rounds.

Even further back there was Coast to Coast, Long's Drugs ammo, Big R Ranch and Home, Gemco, etc...

At least my wallet is grown up since then up too.

I bought a case of Federal Bulk for 8.88 a brick of 550...

As for Collectible I have 7000 rounds of Winchester Western, it was collectible BEFORE the current craze at $40 a brick, I'm afraid to check on the price now because I might sell to buy that RV I want!

Yep the old gas wars were great lowest I ever saw was 16 cents/gallon in Sonoma 1964. Which my dad said was still too high cuz when HE was a kid they paid 5 cents a gallon! "Tractor Fuel" coal oil or kerosene was 2-3 cents per gallon. They had engines that started on gas, when warmed up they switched to the cheaper fuel.

OP, that's cool man, I had a few boxes from K-mart and Montgomery Wards last year. They were 22 short, its hard to fins those for 1.19 a box these days so we shot em up.

I think a Federal Bulk pack of 550 was about $10 then. That's .018 per round - less than 2 cents.
