    Remy 597

Hey guys I brought home my 597 home today. I slid in an empty mag and pulled the bolt back, holding said bolt in place. Then I noticed a small spring had fallen out of the bolt and I can hear something rattling inside. What the hells going on???

Sound like maybe the last shot hold open latch and spring might have come off. The latch is held into place with a pin which also keeps the spring in place.

I suggest you check out the Remington 597 section at RimfireCentral.com

You'll find a lot of good information on the 597 there. The forum users are always willing to help.

Then that rifle needs to go back to the dealer and you need a new, different serially-numbered 597.

If you do this, you will also get a brand new 10 day wait.
Just have the dealer fix it. Worst case it can be sent back to the factory(which will take longer than 10 days). Or just man up, take it apart and put it back together right.

I contacted remington about it and am getting a new extractor shipped to me. I took it apart and its the extractor spring that fell out. The plunger was loose inside so I put those to the side until the new extractor comes in

So how's it shooting? I have 2 597's & they both shoot pretty good & haven't had any failures so far.

Yea, the 597 doesn't get much love on this forum, but I far prefer it over my Marlin 795. Seems at least, if not more accurate than the Marlin and the ability to just pull back and release the charging handle to chamber a round is great.

                            I've both the 597 and a 10/22. I enjoy shooting both.
It's a lot easier to blow money on the 10/22 buying add-on parts than the 597.

You'll have fun shooting the 597.

Have you taken it apart yet to find the rattle? Who knows, it might be the missing extractor.

If he takes it apart himself will he then get static from Rem or LGS?

First thing I'd do is return to LGS and ask WTF should I do, etc and hopefully have them confirm "something ain't right". That should also tell you if you want to continue to give them your biz.

My 597's rear sight was all sloppy loose ready to fall of straight out of the box. Not a biggie but didn't give me a high opinion of Rem's quality control. OK, the fact they released that rifle at all with old style plastic mags that mostly didn't work with any ammo....but I really liked the ergonomics.

Hopefully it will work out, 597 is much nicer shooter IMO than 10/22 or Marlin.

PS-What is considered The Protocol as far as how much a LGS/FFL is supposed to do service wise for a new gun they just sold that has any 'issues'?
Am I a good shot!?!, YEAH I'M A GOOD SHOT!....i just got bad aim
