My 14 yr old daughter who is physically pretty slight wants to shoot. While she is able to handle the trigger and hammer on my two 357 revolvers (S&W 60 and 620), I was afraid her first experience with the recoil - even with a 38 round - might turn her off. So I decided to get a 22 revolver. Part of this was selfish since I decided that given the cost of ammo, I would like to also shoot a 22 sometimes. Went to Turners and explained what I was looking for and they strongly pushed the Ruger SP101. When I picked it up both the trigger and hammer were so heavy that she couldn't shoot it DA or SA. I couldn't shoot it accurately DA and SA became a bit much after 50 or so rounds.
I went to one OC gunsmith who didn't think that changing the springs would work well. I went back to Turners and a few sales guys there had really no answer other than to sell it and suggested purchasing a Ruger Single Six (both trigger and hammer actions are much lighter). But then one of the older salesman came by and recommended another gunsmith that he's used extensively for issues such as this. I called him from Turners and he said to come over and he'd take a look. After about an hour of trying different springs and making sure that the there was sufficient tension to prevent misfires, he was able to make it work really smoothly. Am taking my daughter to the range tomorrow to try it out. He was great to deal with and so I am passing on his name: Jan Merson of American Firearms and Gunsmithing in La Habra. Great service and just a great guy to deal with.
