Best bolt action 22 for $500 or less?

OK, dumb question, but what do folks think? I'm considering a CZ 455. I'd also consider a savage or whatever else folks like. Any suggestions?

Although I haven't had the opportunity to shoot one, I am impressed with the Ruger American 22. Been considering picking one up for my kids.

And of course it would help if I mentioned what I'll use it for :-) Mostly target shooting, though I think if I get the CZ and swap the barrel for a .17, I may do some squirrel hunting. But mostly I'll be plinking and making holes in paper.

This is what I did... CZ 455 with both the .22LR and .17HMR barrels. I don't think you will find a better option for around $500. I also looked at the Savage Mark II and supposedly the accuracy is right there with the CZ but the fit and finish is considerably better on the CZ. The Savage is much less expensive though. When you take into account you will have this gun forever, the extra $100-200 for the better gun seems well worth it.

I concur. One of my buddy has one, dead nuts accurate. I've always wanted one!

I was looking at the CZ 455 line, but after some research, I'll think I'll pass until CZ works out the kinks.

CZ is still selling the 452 American and Ultralux.

It's subjective of course, but if you're buying new, you'd be hard pressed to find one significantly better than the CZ. (I went with a 452 Varmint in your shoes last year.)

Though you could also go for a used target rifle, such as in this thread. There are some pretty nice finds out there, if you're after more of a range toy and less of a field rifle.

Not sure what's best but I am plenty happy with a Marlin XT.

                          Well under $500.

A CZ452 American in 22LR is a mighty fine little rifle.

I just bought a 455 and have yet to shoot it because of the 22lr shortage.
