I'd stay with a kid gun for the youngsters (Rascal, Cricket, etc)...10-22 is way too big and heavy for my kid, she's going on 8. And the bolt action single shot is key for practicing good basics, accuracy and safety. They are only $150-$175.

I have had great luck with the Crickett for my three oldest grandkids, who are 6, 8, & 10 now. The oldest started shooting at 5 with the Crickett.

I have 10/22's in the safe waiting for them to get bigger. I was able to get three with consecutive serial numbers a while back.

        3 suggestions:
        1. CZ Scout
        2. CZ Scout
        3. CZ Scout

As said above when he out grows the short stock you can get a full size stock. The CZ Scout action, bolt and trigger is the same as on the full size CZ rimfires, just a smaller stock. I have one that I put in a CZ American stock and it shoots circles around my 10/22's and Marlin 60. (All stock)

I'd go with a Thompson Center hot shot it is break action single shot, and the hammer has to pulled back when ready to shoot, so it slows down the youngster makes them think a bit. It also feels light but locks up tights and feels solid unlike some other youth .22 I have handled. Also has a simple to use peep sight and a butt stock extension for when your youngster gets bigger.

+1, I sometimes sneak my son's Crickett out without him! It s a fun, accurate shooter and my 5 year old handles it with no problems.

                +1 for CZ 452 Scout

Just pick one up and shoulder it... look down the sights.. operate the controls...
Have the kid do the same.

Then you'll know what to do.

I have a 10/22 and it is a little heavy for my 9 year old son. He can stand and shoot but its a struggle to keep proper form, may check out the Rascal....

i got the cricket for my son, hes still to young to shoot, but ive shot about 10 rounds through it, i LOVE it.

however, i wax poetical about anything that has the savage accutrigger.

After watching Fate's son shot his Rascal for the first time, I'd go with a Rascal and not look back. For the $159 I saw them for a couple weeks ago, you can't go wrong. The trigger is great and the peep sight is a little crude but better than most irons on rifles with a similar price point.

I do not know what a Rascal or a Cricket are, but I started out on a Remington Model 12 pump action .22LR back in the dawn of time. Somewhere when I was under 10.

I had a hard time holding it up and aiming it. But the will and the heart were there.
So I shot countless rounds and built up my arms.

when looking for a 22lr for my 9 year old at the time I looked into a marlin xt-22yr. I opted for this over a cricket or rascal for the fact that they will eventually outgrow single shot. although I'm sure you'd have no problem selling it, they'd eventually outgrow it. what sold me on the xt22 was that it comes with a single shot mag but also can use 5 or 10 round magazines. I couldn't find one anywhere and ended up going with a CZ452 youth it ended up being twice the price but has a nice wood stock. the CZ also came with a single shot magazine but again unlike a cricket or rascal takes 5 or 10 round magazines as well. it is a little heavier than the marlin (which has a synthetic stock) but am glad I went with something that has the option to take a magazine besides just being single shot. I find myself enjoy shooting the CZ and I have 5 and 10 round magazines for when I shoot and can simply swap in the single shot sled for when my son shoots.

Henry Mini-bolt Youth model. Lightweight, very accurate and durable. My boys grew up with it and even now we still like to take it as a camping/backpacking rifle since it is so small and light and most of all very accurate even with the short barrel.

We have no doubt a Henry Mini Bolt Youth .22 is the perfect rifle for introducing youngsters to shooting and hunting. Of course, we're just a little biased. So go ahead and talk to the knowledgeable folks on the USA Olympic Shooting Team. They were so impressed by its kid-friendly performance and bull's eye-punching accuracy,
