Have you looked at the Ruger American?
Bolt action, good open sights, and drilled & tapped for scope mounting. You can get it with a short or long barrell, short/youth stock, and purchase a longer or normal length stock. Easy to change out.

I highly recommend a CZ 452. I believe they make a youth stock for it, too.

10 yo coming into the sport

I'm a firm believer of slowing them down to learn the basics in safety and with a bolt action (mission accomplished). Started my son last year on the Marlin XT-22 youth, good fit for him considering his arm length and the weight of the rifle...No regrets, I bought a sling, now onto tech sights and then Appleseed...Good luck!

They make a youth model as well. But you might as well give him a gun that will last so that he can give it to his son or daughter one day.

Thumbs up on the 15-22. It's collapsible stock makes it great for younger shooters.

for me, the first thing i shot well with was a 10/22, although i really enjoyed the larger caliber semi-autos and bolt actions that were available... 300WM was a good time then and it's still a good time now. too bad the one i want is still too expensive for me right now.

I also promised him then that if he gets straight A this semester, I'll get him a 22LR handgun. Since then, he likes the Mosquito most. Just brought that one home today. If he gets all A's, then it's his. Otherwise, it's mine.

I say if you want to find the best one for him, let him pick it out. I have a Ruger 10/22, a Marlin 60 and my son has a Sig 522 (his first rifle when he was 12) that I would be willing to let him try out. Hit me up and we can try to work something out and let him shoot them.
