My boys (9 & 11) love their M&P 15-22. We go through about a brick of 22 at every outing.

When my daughter turned 8, I bought her a used Marlin "Little Buckaroo". It weighed 3-1/2 pounds and she was able to mount it properly and control it comfortably. I added a Williams rear peep sight and a globe front sight, trimmed the springs some and stoned the trigger.

She went DE with that rifle before she was 10.

My point is, find something that fits properly and that your son will has a chance for success with. Nothing breeds frustration, poor shooting habits, and disinterest in the sport like an ill-fitting gun with a heavy trigger.

I coached a lot of youths through our youth program at the local range, and seeing kids struggle with dad's or grandpa's .22 was commonplace. Most get frustrated and drop out of the sport.
Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

How about a henry golden boy?

They make a youth model as well. But you might as well give him a gun that will last so that he can give it to his son or daughter one day.

Depending on how much you wish to spend, maybe something sort of basic. I met a guy at the range with a Marlin XT bolt action rifle. He was out with his son for the first time. They both had a lot of praise for the Marlin. They were planning to upgrade the sights from the stock sights to Tech-Sights. Given the current ammo situation a semi-auto would burn through hard-to-find ammo.

CZ Scout 22lr if you can find one. When he grows up you can replace the small stock with a standard stock, and his grand kids will have a nice rifle. He will never wear it out.

I second that recommendation. Was going to provide a link to the CZ website but its being updated. Here is a link to Buds Guns Shop: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/a...cout&x=13&y=10

I bought my son a C&R bolt action 22 that was in fantastic shape for being almost 90 years old. He outgrew shooting that quickly and I got him a Ruger 10/22. He will likely shoot that rifle the rest of his life. There is tremendous aftermarket support and parts and mags are plentiful.

My six yr old shoots a savage rascal but that might be on the small side for a 10yr old. I also picked up a ruger American rimfire for my 9 yr old. The compact model
