Ammo Storage?

Hello,

I hope I'm posting this in the correct spot :-) I am new to shooting and have been slowly acquiring bulk .22 LR ammunition. 2 questions, what is the best way to store it and what type of containers/boxes are available to load a few hundred rounds when I head out shooting.

I like to keep organized and would prefer to just not toss it into a bulk bucket :-)

I use 50 cal cans for the bulk of my storage. When I go to the range depending on the amount of shooting to be done I grab a 30 cal ammo can and put a few boxes worth in and off I go.
I leave all ammo in the box that they are packaged in, never know when you might need the info printed on the box, ie...squib or recall notice.

Lots of different options available. Try to get one that seals good.
If you're worried about moisture throw in a few dessicant packages.

I use 50 cal cans as well.

I also stick a dessicant pack in with the ammo to keep moisture out during long term storage. Keep the ammo in a cool, dark, place that isn't vulnerable to temperature swings.

If you want a smaller can for transport get a 30 cal can or one of the smaller plastic ammo boxes.

i keep a few cci boxes around and put ammo in the boxes when i go to the range so i dont have to carry as much.

For long term storage there's no beating the good ol' GI 50 cal can. Plastic dry boxes would be second place. Cool & dry at any rate. Moisture is the enemy.

For range trips/storage I like these. O ring seal so it stays dry between trips and robust enough to toss in the pistol box or range bag. These are centerfire but one of these boxes holds right about 500 rds of .22LR

Ditto the CCI plastic boxes if you can find some. Been a long time since I've found any in the range trash.

I have ammo from the early 80's that is just like I bought it. The only thing I did was use a good, clean ammo can. Once, about 5 years ago, I hit the seal with a dab of silicon spray. Not that I needed to do anything to it, just felt it couldn't hurt.

would also recommend the 50cal ammo cans, I usually use the original box or the 100ct plastic boxes and have a big range bag when I go shoot.

+1 for the "click n' save" containers. They seal really well and are clear so you can see what type and how much ammo you have. They come in all sizes.
I like the ones that hold about 1/2 brick (22lr)

I store in GI or GI style .50 cans also. The CCI bulk packs fit in the cans perfectly (4500 to a can in the packs). Everything else seems to waste a lot of space, so it is tempting to dump them in, but I just buy more cans. I have a lot of buckets and mini-mag sliders on top of my safe not in cans. I don't feel the need to put all the containers into other containers if they are sealed already.

Non-22 ammo I unbox and store on strippers if possible... or I dump in loose rounds on bottom and place the loaded strippers I have on top to fill the can. I throw in one folded ammo box or panel so I know what kind of ammo is in there. I use stickers with caliber labeled on the front of the ammo cans. I write or label round count for the can on the box insert inside the can.

I usually take a couple bricks to the range so It is really easy to just grab a couple bulk packs like 323, 375, or 525 cardboard bulk pack. I leave it opened up at the range to grab cartridges to load mags with.

The snap 'n seals are a great idea, I need to get some.

+1. Except for premium ammo like Minimags I remove from the packaging and dump loose into metal .50 cal ammo cans(of course separated by brand).

I use a quality desiccant tin in each can like this one from Midway USA. Ammo should outlast you stored like that.

A 50 cal ammo can holds over 5,775 rounds loose.

I always keep all ammo in it's original boxes (in case there is a recall---so I can check the lot #)---I keep them in either orig metal or more recent plastic ammo type cans in a cool, dry place---ammo stored this way lasts almost forever...





Also, I can then take just a few boxes out to the range for shooting.
