OP- The 15-22 is a great little plinker no question. Personally I think a dedicated .22 AR like a CMMG upper setup is the best way to go because you have a more realistic weight and the ability to use any AR accessory you want.
Yeah I have a droid... haven't quite manned up and gotten the latest and greatest handheld electronic haha. Been buying too much crap for builds. More so the price of .22lr that is found is pretty over the top. I found some at our new Dick's Sporting Goods in the area for $10/50rds. With a 3 box minimum. That's BS if you ask me. If the OP is good with hunting for ammo, then I say right on and nab it up. However there are a lot of people that just don't want the hassle.

I love my 10/22 which I put tech sights and a hogue stock on, but for pure fun I think the mp15-22 has it beat by a wide margin. You might like others but you won't find a better one.

GREAT PICS! How old is your son?

I am so looking forward to bringing my son out to the range when he gets a little older. He's 4.5, so I'm thinking in a few more years!

I love mine, and even in these days of shortages, I have been able to save up at least 5K rounds of good quality ammunition and several spare mags for mine.

As mentioned above, pay a little more and get the MOE version. I mounted a PA red dot sight and the rifle shoots like a laser. Busting stationary clays between 50 to 100 yards is not even much of a challenge.

Oh boy, 15-22 is one fun rifle and a great training partner to an AR15! I am very happy with mine and consider it as one of my better investments in guns. My kids love that rifle, too.

And yes, get the MOE version - worth it. Ammo can be had with modest effort. Even if you get ammo for $0.10 per rd, that's still a lot cheaper than .223 ammo. Just make every shot count.

            Good luck!

My 15-22 was my first firearm purchase less than 2 years ago. So much fun and cheap to shoot. It started the addiction/disease of needing to add to the collection so now I have 2 other long guns, 2 handguns with a handgun in jail. IMO, can't go wrong with the joy of shooting the M&P. And yes, I would get the MOE version. I did.

You can't go wrong, best AR15 dedicated .22lr platform out there.

He's 11. 4 1/2 is probably a little young for rifles, but I started shooting with my sons at around 8. start off with a bb gun or airsoft gun as they can learn all the gun safety from them and do it in the backyard. but be careful, if you think shooting is an expensive hobby for us, kids will nag you incessantly to get more and more. and it's so hard to say no!!!

but it's an easy excuse to buy more. "happy birthday" isn't just for him

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

Thanks to everyone that replied, I pulled the trigger on the M&P 15-22 MOE today Now I just need to be on the look out for some cheap .22 ammo - if you see something, just send it my way.

Congrats! I think you will be happy with it... when you find ammo.

By the way, ammo is there but not as cheap. Good luck!

My M&P 15-22 is the funniest rifle I got in my safe and the cheapest one to shoot by far. Its the only rifle that makes me wanna get an exact duplicate just cause I love it so much.

                          >I would rather get a .223/5.56 AR15 and run a .22lr conversion bolt or have a dedicated .22lr upper and slap it on a AR lower.

I have both and the 15-22 is 'funner' than a CMMG upper on the AR. Main things that annoyed me were 1) unless you build your 223 AR 'featureless', there is a bullet button on your lower ( which doesn't need to be for when you are running rimfire) and 2) the upper is more finicky if you have a light/nice trigger on your AR lower - I got lots of light strikes with a G-SSE. The 15-22 on the other has has been like a Glock -- firing anything I feed it w/o much complaint.

The CMMG is still cool for training exactly like an AR (weight/feel), and less hassle to put a free float handguard on it.

I think you'll really enjoy your 15-22. If you (OP) are NorCal and need some 22LR to get started, pm me.

My dad bought one after I convinced him to rent one a shooting range. I used to take it to the range when I would take new shooters. Now I don"t bother looking for .22 lr ammo. It is a fun gun I added a tapco forward grip to it, and might added more things to it if .22 ammo is ever plentiful again.
