    M&P 15-22 - thoughts?

Hi all - I am thinking of picking up a rimfire rifle for an economical practice rifle (the 223 ammo is costly!).

I have read a lot of good things about the M&P 15-22 (MOE version) so that's what I think I'm going to get but wanted to get opinions.

    Thoughts? Considerations?

The 15-22 is an awesome little plinker. Problem is, unless you have bulk .22lr already, don't think your just gonna go down to your lgs and pick up a bunch of .22. It's like panning for gold trying find it right now, and if you do, youre probably gonna pay the price.

I had a M&P 15-22 MOE before, which I think is worth the money for the features it has. It was a fun 22 rifle to begin with, but gradually got bored of it since the rifle is just a solid performer and rarely had any problems. Also, one thing to keep in mind is that the M&P 15-22 is limited to only 22lr. For versatility, I would rather get a .223/5.56 AR15 and run a .22lr conversion bolt or have a dedicated .22lr upper and slap it on a AR lower.

They are excellent, the platform has all the bigger AR features great
training tool, including a real hold open on the last shot-NOT pulling the mag out and have the bolt fly forward!A lot of guys prefer their kits on their AR but a Complete
Rifle in 22 rim fire is better then a bunch of loose parts to put on the big
rifle (in my opinion) PLUS the bb on the lower? Pete

Absolutely love mine, but as stated already, can't find ammo easily so if you don't already have a stash, might want to hold off until ammo in 22lr is more easily acquireable

You are looking for an economical rimfire rifle? or an rimfire tactical rifle?

If you are just looking for an economical rimfire rifle nothing beats a Marlin 795. They are very accurate out of the box and they cost around 145-160. I got mine on a weekend sale from turners for $119. Anticipate the Marlin 795 to be around $119 or $99 bucks on black friday in november.

If you want a tactical AR looking rimfire rifle, then there is the MP15/22 , ARX160, HKMP5 rimfire. However they are all around $500+, not worth it in my opinion. My Marlin 795 is a hell of a lot funner and more accurate than my Beretta ARX160. I feel spending $500+ for a rimfire rifle is useless. I am 100% selling my Beretta ARX160 after owning the Marlin. I could buy 3 more Marlins for what I paid for the Beretta lol

I just bought a 15-22 a month ago as my first rifle. Plan on moving up to a standard AR 15 after I get out of college and can afford to shoot one often. My 15-22 has full magpul furniture and I love it. If you are willing to spend the money its awesome.
Ammo isn't that hard to find online, just be patient.

There is this invention called a iPhone that makes it reasonably easy to get all the .22 lr ammo you want, even now. Just have to know where to look and check often. I've been getting 1500+ rounds a week for the past couple months.

OP- The 15-22 is a great little plinker no question. Personally I think a dedicated .22 AR like a CMMG upper setup is the best way to go because you have a more realistic weight and the ability to use any AR accessory you want.

I have found that my MP-15-22 is the perfect tool to get my non shooting friends to get over their fear of EBR's. I have six so far that have gone from "oh my god, is that an assault rifle?" To "we're coming up this weekend, can we go shooting?" Most of them now enjoy shooting my AR as well, after getting comfortable with the .22. Most importantly, they understand the hype that was coming out of the politicians a** this year. Get one!

Mild amount of effort on-line can net you plenty of .22lr.

After handling both the 15-22 and a SIG 522, I went with the Sig.

Feels more substantial, the trigger is better, IMO. My friend's 522 never had one misfire with all sorts of ammo, including Remington GB. The folding stock is not a bad feature, and the mags (Black Dog) are more universal than the S&W ones (and more enclosed). I was actually going to buy an HK MP5 .22 rifle, but decided it was too :"toy-like".

I have a 15-22 MOE and I think it's a great rifle. I went with it instead of a dedicated upper because I wanted the light weight for teaching kids and ladies to shoot with it; the collapsible buttstock allowing length of pull adjustment is a great benefit for small shooters. I also didn't want to have to lock/unlock a bullet button so preferred a dedicated .22lr complete rifle instead of swapping uppers. Zero malfunctions with a variety of ammo through it, and its very easy to clean unlike some of the competition. Vastly superior to the .22lr conversion unit I've had since the 70's.

Mine has a fantastic trigger pull out of the box; better than most of my centerfire AR's and R.A.W.s Also the 15-22 magazine is excellent and is being used now by a lot of people with dedicated uppers via an adapter instead of BDM magazines in order to get a reliable bolt hold open on last shot. ProMag also makes a magazine for the 15-22 which is supposedly reliable; when I was travelling in Oregon I saw lots of 15-22 magazines available at retailers.

                            15-22 thoughts? I like it.
If you want change you have to put in your 2 cents, you can't just sit on the sidelines and whine.

                              M&P 15-22 - thoughts?

I looked at lots of the AR style 22's and the Hk and sig 22's as well and ended up with the m&p15-22. Look and feel is awesome. It's a helluva shooter. Plenty accurate too. I love my 10/22 which I put tech sights and a hogue stock on, but for pure fun I think the mp15-22 has it beat by a wide margin. You might like others but you won't find a better one.

I thought it was for me. He has other ideas

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.
