The 10/22 (or maybe the SR-22 because you want a tacticool look and feel) is probably best for your first one because of the reliability, upgrade options, accuracy, etc. as others have said. The performance will be in direct proportion to what you spend. Kidd and Volquartsen barrels cost as much as the base rifle but they are dead nuts accurate. A Volquartsen or Timney trigger assembly is a huge upgrade as well if you're ready to spend another $200+. Once I found the best match ammo for my 10/22 with the Vol barrel (the SR-22 liked a different round) it was incredibly accurate even at 200yds. I also used and like the Hogue stock and I chose a 3-9 Bushnell Elite Tactical.

The Sig 522 is accurate, eats almost any ammo, is light weight and easy to clean.

The GSG has been reliable as well, but not quite as accurate. I have a relatively early one and the build quality is very good. It is heavier than the rest.

The ARs are good, but I only recommend the dedicated upper route with a good barrel (mine is a Lothar Walther). Tactical Solutions also gets high marks from what I've read. With the AR platform, you'll have lots of options for furniture and accessories.

      Good luck and have fun!
If you are going to upgrade the trigger in a 10/22, get a Kidd trigger group. It's on sale right now for 200 bucks. I paid full price for mine and have never regretted it one bit. The only regret I have is not doing it sooner. If $200 is too much for you to spend on a trigger, you can get this kit for about half and it is reported to be almost as good as the other one. You could also send your trigger to Brimstone or CPC. Volquartsen makes some good stuff, but their 10/22 trigger does not compete with the Kidd trigger or a re-worked trigger form Brimstone or CPC, in my opinion. Whatever you do, run away fast and far from the VQ hammer kit. For about the same money or maybe a little less, you can have Brimstone do their $35 trigger job and be much happier.

To the OP, if you don't have a 10/22 of some sort get one of those and make it the way you want it. I had a 15/22 and loved it, but never shot it. The 10/22 is the 22 that goes to the range every single time.

The Sig 522 has a solid reputation. Can't go wrong.

Another vote for the 10-22. I've probably put 25,000 rounds through mine and it still shoots like a champ.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. It seems that I can't really go too wrong with any of my initial choices, but the 10/22 seems to be a great platform to start out on. I'll keep my eye out for one.

First things first though, I need to sell one of my pistols to free up some cash =).

Happy hunting! Depending on where you're at, keep an eye on the big 5 ad - they've frequently had 10/22s on sale in the $200 neighborhood

Does is have to be a semi-auto? If not, may I recommend a Henry lever action? It takes .22 LR, .22 Long and .22 Short and is fun.

                Good luck!

Get a stock 10-22 and put hundreds of dollars in upgrades to get it to shoot good!

Or just get a Sig522, a bunch of mags and go to the range.
