But in all seriousness can someone explain why not to use a dowel or cleaning rod and to use a brass rod. I don't see how wood could do any harm.

Because you will have a wood dowel or aluminum rod to get unstuck, as well as the bullet. Steel cleaning rods are too small in diameter in relation to the bore to drive the lead bullet properly.
For lead bullets, use a bore-riding steel rod to drive them out. Make the end contacting the bullet square and polish it. I use 0-1. Mild steel is too soft. Run some oil in the bore too. Avoid brass. Some folks get lucky with it but it is a wreck waiting to happen.
Do not try to drive a stuck jacketed bullet. A bullet jammed in the throat is not really stuck, like one halfway down the barrel.

Brass jag on end of SS cleaning rod will do it. better if you have a bore guide. A bit of lube from the breach end.

Are you sure it's just one round? I just finished taking 20 projectiles out of a Taurus Circuit Judge that the owner was shooting primer only cartridges in...

A brass rod will not dislodge more than 2 or 3 projectiles...

Steel on steel? Bullets still fly straight after you have the dislodged one removed. Your method is capable of damaging the rifling.

diff method-did I screw the pooch?

I had a similar incident with a rimfire kit on a 1911 and I cleared the stuck round "in the field". Reading all the recommendations here with hammering on brass rods, steel rods, etc. makes me wonder if I did some harm that I can't detect.

Knowing that I had only one bullet stuck in the barrel, I took another round, found an empty .223 case and used the .223 case mouth to gently wobble the bullet out of the good case without opening up the mouth too much or spilling out the powder.

I cut a small piece off a cotton patch, and pushed that into the case mouth as wadding to keep the powder inside.

Chambered that in the gun, fired it and blew the stuck round out.

Inspected the barrel afterward could detect no bulges or other abnormality, so I continued to shoot with no observed ill effect.

Is this a "not good" method??

              TIA

If the stuck bullet had not come loose, where would the force of the powder going off go?

Steel rod is the professional method for driving lead bullets. If done properly, no damage results. Jacketed rifle bullets need to be cut, or hydraulically pushed out.
