another common cause of failure to fire is a buildup of residue where the rim meets the breech causing a 'light strike' by cushioning the blow. five ftf in a row sounds like the firearm has issues.

do all the above then: clean thoroughly, try some different ammo.

This response is not directed at you specifically...it is directed toward the general attitude of ALOT of people who don't see the potential of .22lr ammo in a defensive capacity.

What if a .22cal firearm is all you've got? If it's all you've got, then it's all that'll have to do. If so, then I suggest getting the best rimfire ammo you can find (preferably match quality ammo that are less prone to not fire and are more accurate), fire at least two cylinders or mags worth through your firearm to determine your POA/POI, then hope you never have to use it. I mean...c'mon folks...it's not like we're reconing in a hostile combat zone looking for trouble...and it's not likely you'll need to reload your firearm anytime soon with more ammo due to a recent badguy encounter which caused you to use the potential lethal force of your .22cal firearm on him/her and that it's imminent use AGAIN is just around the corner...right? But...if you're ever put in a position to use it for defensive purposes for even that one time that it may/could/will happen, then at least have the confidence in knowing that IT WILL WORK.

I'm realistic about the potential lethality of the .22lr ammo. I think high-velocity hollow-point .22lr ammo is a viable defensive round for the purpose of stopping a deadly threat or action against you IF you have good shot placement...and maybe lots of it if necessary. Correct and the extreme determined use of your .22lr firearm for the preservation of your life or the life of others in a hostile situation is far better than the incorrect and panicked use of a .45cal firearm or ANY firearm which could result in NO lethal shot placements or NO hits at all to stop the threat.

Lots of people believe .22lr of any flavor IS NOT a viable defensive round. If that is indeed true, I for one would like to see any irrefutable evidence that with good shot placement(s) that it IS NOT a viable defensive round...and that it IS NOT a deadly round. For instance...I have yet to see or hear of ANY LIVE human volunteers to who stood or would stand nonchalantly in front of speeding .36gr high-velocity hollow-point .22lr bullets heading for their head/face/neck areas multiple times...let alone just a single round...and tell us it doesn't work when it strikes those areas. Obviously a smart volunteer to prove the .that the .22lr IS NOT a viable defensive round won't happen anytime soon...right? Right.

My take is this: Never dismiss the lethality of a quality .22lr firearm with quality ammo in the hands of a determined operator who chooses it as his/her primary defensive firearm

But I know this debate will continue for time immemorial....

I'd rather have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I have nowhere near that many duds. How old & how clean are your .22s?

OP I would say there's something wrong with your gun.

The only time I've had back to back misfires is when my ammo got contaminated by a some frog lube.
