I would have said Marlin, until they moved production and lost the JM mark.

Today I would chose a Henry Golden Boy.

Killer Bee wrote ,"I bought that golden boy right after my boy was born.. that picture was taken when he about three months old.. Anthony Imperato gave him the custom serial of his initials and birthdate.. and sent a personal letter for the day we give it to him.. sorry, no details on performance - nib until boy's old enough to decide."

That's Mr. Imperato at his best, when he can, he will respond directly to the customer.
I won't buy any other brand, just because of him, and his rifles are excellent
        also.

your son is a lucky boy...the docs for that gun and the rifle will stay with him forever~
I do prefer the golden boy over the stock H001..don't like that powdercoat receiver and the plastic on the barrel...I'm assuming the golden Boy has all metal?

I emailed Henry and they replaced the barrel band & front sight with metal ones for free.

I recently purchased a Henry golden boy due to the ammo shortage (my excuse)
Anyhow in this area 22 shorts are readily available while long rifle is unobtainable. Using cci and aguila shorts the golden boy shoots fantastic at 25 yard spinners and is very quite. I have fired over 2500 rounds without a single issue though I did need to run a bore snake to clean chamber before using some long rifle ammo I had on hand. Nice looking gun, smooth action, accurate and reliable. I have no regrets at all.

Well I happen to have all three...

The BL22 was lightest, factest action and most accurate.

The Henry Golden Boy has the smoothest action out of the Box and is VERY striking.

The Marlin (as most Marlins do) has a horrible gritty out of the box action, but the most "rifle like" of the bunch, on mine I put a classic Lyman Tang Sight and Beech front sight, nice heft to it and a good long range gun with that set up...

IF I had to pick on, the BL22...by why stick with one?

went to Wild Sports..they had a Henry Golden Boy, H001, and the Browning BL-22..Golden Boy won't take a scope and even it has the plastic rifle band..and it was heavier with the octagon barrel..but butter smoooth lever action..so was the H001..alot lighter..sights were much better than on the Golden Boy in my opinion,...Browning was heavy, lever action much shorter but terribly gritty..I'm gonna take a look at a Browning BLP-22 1977 model pump before I make up my mind.

Mike, I think you can still call Henry or email them and they will send a steel barrel band and front sight.

The Golden Boy will indeed take a scope. Here is my son's, all scoped out:

Of course you can always add a tang sight to a GB the look would be cool & I'd bet the right one would make the gun a great shooter.

The barrel is tapped under the rear sight for the scope mount. It is a cantleiver design. Have a look

went to Sportsmens Warehouse today and bought my first rifle..Henry H001 22lr. The salesmen said if you are going to buy the Henry buy this one, and pulled out a H001 that had the most beautiful stock I have ever seen! It almost looked like Zebra wood only very dark. I grabbed it~
I will address plastic parts with Henry on Friday~
They also had a Browning BL-22 and the Mossberg..I had looked at similiar rifles at Wild Sports in Orangelvale...Sportsmens Warehouse has much better pricing..and I'm not talking a few dollars..over $50 cheaper for the Henry.
Lookingat that fancy Henry gun case on the HRO sight..and maybe a nice leather stock cover~
