Ruger 10-22 vs Marlin 795

i look at it this way. if you want to dump a decent amount of money in to it get the 10/22 endless aftermarket stuff. if you are going to justify buying a cheap rilfe to shoot cheap ammo and have fun with out breaking the bank on aftermarket stuff then get the marlin. OR just buy both and move on to the next project. but in my experience owning both the 10/22 after the first 1k rds or so its not so picky on ammo amy more. but the tightest groups will go to the marlin both sport a Ncstar scope. cant go wrong with either one for the price point

They're both fine. I'd personally opt for the 10/22 but only because of the availability of parts and upgrades. Out of the box, either is completely acceptable.

mags for 795 suck, i got rid of mine because of it.

Sounds like an exception to the norm, I've got 6 or 7 of them and have never had any problems with them.

The Baby Uplula really helps though.

I also suggest the 795. I've had issues with feeding/jamming.

I also wanted a 10/22 so I panic bought a 10/22 TD since it was at least different from a standard 10/22. For accuracy, the 795 is amazing.

You probably will get both, they're both great firearms.

I bought the Marlin 795 as my first long gun and earlier this year bought the 10/22 TD for the ability to throw it in a backpack.

My 10/22 TD has only been to the range. My Marly 795 I took to an Appleseed modded with a BSA Sweet 22 scope (bad eyes) and the DIP trigger/trigger guard. I had some FTF while there. I attribute it to the weapon getting gunked up with paste Frog Lube. I've used the liquid exclusively on it and had no problems since.

The 10/22 TD has been super reliable but I think I'm partial to the Marly. It functions more like I'd prefer it to right of the box. For my 10/22 I already put an auto bolt release on there and I'll probably buy a Kidd trigger as well. I thought about a last shot hold open, but it would require modification of my existing magazines or new magazines modified specifically for the feature (If I recall correctly).

I think you can't go wrong with either.

Good Lord! I bought a 795, put a scope on it, bought and installed the DIP trigger/trigger guard and brought it to an Appleseed, where I had a bunch of FTF at the shoot. But before I went I thoroughly cleaned it up. And shot a Rifleman's score. (I went to two appleseeds with it) The second time, I felt I couldn't really trust it, so even though the course of fire was "load 2 magazines, one with 2 rounds, one with 8" I kept an extra magazine handy in case of jamming so I could make up the lost round (meaning I had to change 3 mags if I lost a round to FTF).

Under Appleseed pressure, I felt uncomfortable not knowing if I could trust it. For normal range time, it's great.

And I also bought the 10/22 TD and the auto-bolt release...

OP, before u buy, take a look at the savage trr-sr 64. It comes with a nice stock, fluted and threades barrel, and a top picatiny rail ready for a scope. Cons, not many after market parts and the bolt does not stay open after last round.

I have an older 10/22. Marlin is owned by Remington. Remington took the 30 pieces of silver and stayed in NY. So get a 10/22.

Accuracy? 10/22's are horrible


That's with stock barrel and trigger. Only added tech sights and a hogue stock. You really don't need to mod them all out.

I don't have a 10-22 but love my Marlin 795.
This is 20 rounds of CCI Mini-Mag at 50 yards using a scope. The Marlin was completely stock.

Get the model 60 instead. 14+1 and you can make yourself magazines for a couple bucks worth of plastic/aluminum tubing and vacuum caps/cotter pins.

Also, if you really want, you can buy the 795 mag well and a few other small parts from the factory and convert it to be a 795. Best of both worlds.

My prized 22 LR rifle is a Marlin Glenfield. 18 rapid shots of fun. It's an older model so it does take a little bit of more cleaning and love. Marlins are great but if you want "options for your rifle down the road"... 10/22 is the way to go. I love my Glenfield but I wish I had more options... and that includes the 795. Marlin was built to do it's job right out of the box... so just like what everyone else is saying... buy a Marlin if you don't mind a simple rifle at a good price without a lot of options.

Get the Marlin Model 60. Even better. And no chance of it becoming an assault rifle!
