It already has a Ruger extended mag release and a bolt hold/release mod that was added, but not by me. Except for the 1000+ rounds that I personally shot through it and the probable few that was shot by the prior owner, I'll call the gun fairly "new".
The polymer trigger group makes it pretty new, but the important thing to remember is that they don't wear out.

I think I should start with the Volq hammer kit and look for a stock that has a longer lop....hopefully a stock that'll allow me to hog out if/when I swap later to a bull barrel...especially if the ergos and lop work for me. I like that sleeper look, too, Scholling. It'd be great to find a stock-looking wood stock with a longer lop....maybe even dump some match ammo in a plinking bulk ammo box and watch folks go WTF?????? at the range . Might even have to make a used Leupold look like a scope that costs/functions way less than it does

This is gonna "cheap" FUN compared to my AR project.

When I find that perfect-fit wood stock for me, will bedding my standard barrel in it make any significant difference with its accuracy?
The reason that you bed 10/22s is that they have a single screw holding the receiver on place. The factory stock includes a barrel band that keeps the barrel from wandering around, but aftermarket stocks depend on fit. If the stock is tight enough you're fine, but if the fit is the slightest bit lose that takedown screw becomes a pivot point and the barrel will wander with each shot. Don't worry about free-floating a 22LR it's counter productive, you want about 1" of contact area to lock the barrel in place, and a snug fit for the receiver. Some stocks fit nice and tight, while others need a bit of DIY bedding around the receiver and 1" of the barrel.

Both Boyd's and Revolution make adult LOP stocks to fit the factory barrel. The Revolution ExPlorer is designed for use with iron sights, the Trailblazer is meant for use with a scope.

I'm liking that ExPlorer in walnut for that "sleeper" look. I'm going to reinstall oem front/rear sights and install a see-through scope rail. This way I can still use the sights w/o scope or mount my sleeper scope on it with QDs. To get a proper cheek-weld on the ExPlorer with the scope installed, I'll strap a higher cheek-roll on it. Wax on, wax off. The see-through scope rail and longer lop stock would be the only things obvious to the more knowledgable. A sleeper 10/22 that surprises....kinda like Grandma's '68 4-door Nova with a hi-perf motor and other goodies underneath
I'd rather have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Very nice rig...but I'm getting away from the ARs in 22LR. I have a Colt AR15/22 20" SPR that I've had some fun with and will be selling soon to help fund this sleeper and help with the acquisition of a 77/22-22LR down the road. I'm just digging the beauty of wood right now.

          My 2 cents;

Before changing the stock, get some closed cell foam (pool noodle $5) and some veternary tape (sticks to itself) and cut/the foam and tape it to the stock to check for a good LOP for yourself and that rifle. You can fix cheek weld like that too ... just to get you a good idea of what you want in a new stock.

Then buy the cheapo $40 VQ hammer/trigger kit and stick that in.

Then go shoot it and see if you want further mods.

Then go shoot an Appleseed Clinic.

It is a Ruger upper, KIDD bolt, guid rod, spring and handle. KIDD 6oz 2-stage trigger. Clark stainless fluted barrel with KIDD v-block. Hogue stock epoxy bedded. Harris bi pod. And of course the Leupold BR 36 scope.
It will shoot cheap Remington Golden bullets 10 shots into an inch at 100yrds, and Federal Auto Match into 3/4" all day long.
                  Very fun to shoot!

@coverme2, take a look at all the 10/22's out there. A combination of many of them will be the perfect rifle for you! Many of the mods are easy to DIY and many are very inexpensive and add a lot of return on your investment.

                      Yes, its addictive!

nice rifles and mods going on in here. I just bought my kids a 10/22 TD and added a Nikon Prostaff to it. Also modded the bolt release so you don't have to push the bolt catch up into the receiver to release the bolt. Gonna zero in that new scope tomorrow!

The thing I love the most about the 10/22; there are million ways to build it. The thing I hate the most; it becomes one of the most expensive cheap rifles in your collection.

Anyway, here is my set up and I love it!

And yes it is the most expensive cheap gun in my collection too!

Been interested in this Volquartsen Target Hammer w/bushings. Will that stand-alone drop my trigger pull or will I have to upgrade the sear and/or anything else? I've seen some people opt not to use the spring it comes with and just use the original spring. Is that necessary or preference?

They work well enough but don't expect perfection. It'll lower the pull weight to around 2-1/4 to 2-1/2lbs but does nothing for take up or over travel. I really think it's worth the few extra dollars to have it tuned by Clark Custom or Brimstone Gunsmithing. I've used Clark for one of mine and and it came out nice. Brimstone did one of my Mini-14 triggers and I like the work he did enough to have him tune one of my 10/22 triggers next month.
