I ordered the pink laminate compact version from gun broker. The pink was the cheapest I could find. I didn't care about the color since I got an ATI Strike Force stock for it anyway. I have it back in Wisconsin because I don't think the stock is CA legal (fore grip, collapsible and folding stock, pistol grip, and 25rnd mags).

The mags aren't an issue if you owned them before 2000, even if the rifle did have all of those other characteristics. I believe the calguns assault weapons flowchart only applies for centerfire rifles, rimfire pistols are different though, but don't quote me!

Awesome, that's good to hear. I'm only going to be in CA for a few more months, so I won't bring it out here. I don't have any pre-2000 mags, just a few of the new 25rnd battledyne AR style mags.

            10/22

Even if you buy a used one you can rebuild it with a new barrell and a nice stock. I have a Adams and bennett Bull barrell and a Powercustom scope mount on mine.

You can also fit an aftermarket stock and barrel to the takedown version. Might take a little more work than a simple parts swap but looks pretty cool. Planning on doing a wood stock swap for my takedown.

Dont' panic buy. Be patient, persistent, and buy the one you want. IMO, I'd go with the compact. 16.5" barrel is more than enough for 22lr.

Posted this on another thread but it applies here as well.

Tricked out with all the goodies, take down, or compact. Try to find an older 10/22 with metal trigger guards and non-painted finish. Some of the newer ones are no longer painted but have plastic trigger guards.

Leupold VX-II 3-9x33 EFR on the bench, Nikon ProStaff 2-7x32 on the TD, ProPoint Optima on the compact

a great FFL & vendor here on Calguns has two of them.both a cut above the ordinary run of the mill ones.
1)-Ruger 10/22 carbine. BNIB. Purchased in 1998 but never opened. $300

                            2)-Ruger 10/22 Canadian Centenial $450
just search "guns at San Jose gun trader" here on the calguns search engine or google it.
they're great people and I hope it helps you.

The Corona turners had the blued/wood 10/22 in stock today. I picked one up.
