    Bought new Marlin

    Hi
Today I whent to The Shootist in Murrieta and bought a Marlin 795. Great guys that helped me and my wife with all the questions - about the different rifles.
Question are 22's exempt from the 10 round max. magazine.
Does anybody know where I can buy the maximum allowed magazine at a good prize. The Marlin only came with a 7 round magazine.

    Was it new or used?
Are you sure it came with a 7 round magazine? Is the magazine blued or nickel?
Marlin generally ships their semi autos with nickel 10 and bolt actions with blued 7.
It is very strange that they would ship you a 7 round unless this is in response to the NY AWB...

Are you sure it isnt just very tight? What does the sticker on the end of the box say? I seem to remember it saying 10 round on mine but I might be wrong. If your box says 10 round and you received a 7 you might want to call them and ask for another magazine... (If you do please ask them if this was an accident or how they are doing things from here out) Their customer support numbers can be found in the link at the bottom of this post to the 795 megathread

    On to your questions:
Rimfire rifles are not part of CA's Assault Weapon Ban and therefore not restricted to 10 rounds by definition.

    BUT

There is a separate law that pertains to how and when you could acquire magazines over 10 rounds. Pretty much it says that you can not, manufacture, import, sell or give "large-capacity" magazines after Jan 1st 2000.

12020. (a) Any person in this state who does any of the following is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year or in the state prison:
    [...]
    (2) Commencing January 1, 2000, manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives, or lends, any large-capacity magazine.
Anyways, Marlin themselves do not currently make a magazine over 10 rounds for the 795.
There are 3 brands that do, Shooters Ridge and Champion, which seem to be pretty much the same magazine and do not work well. And the new one to come out just about 2 months ago is the Promag. Reports are these ones actually work but are very rare.

As I am sure you are aware there is a panic buy on right now. And it is even hard to find rimfire magazines atm.

What you want is the Nickel (they don't make blue 10 rounders, IDKW) You are looking for "POST-88" Bolt and Auto-Loader Magazines Mgf ID: 71902, that has the cutout in the side. This corresponds to a groove in the magazine well. If you get a Pre-88 magazine without the groove they will not fit!

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/2-MGMAR707135 In-stock at a decent price! But many people hate CTD and sometimes they wont ship to CA...

    So in summary:
Yes Rimfire can use over 10 round magazines
CA has a +10 round magazine ban on selling etc
There are +10 round magazines for the 795, but most are unreliable.

Hope this helps, if you would like to learn more about the Marlin 795 then you should check out the 795 MEGATHREAD! http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=607193

I've heard from other places that they are shipping with 7 rounders now. From what I've heard the 7 rounders function a lot better than the old 10 rounders.

Also heard not to waste your time with most of the larger mags out there as they have problems and break rather easily.

My wife also jailed a Marlin recently. She had her heart set on a model 60 so we scoured the planet and found one. It is synthetic but later that day she got on Boyds and is having a laminate stock delivered.

      Congratulations on the purchase!

          Huh? Old 10 rounders?
I have 8 of the 10 rounders that work flawlessly..

They are the same design, the 7 rounder just has a shorter body...

Sure there was a batch of 10 rounders that where out of spec but Marlin was quick to fix the problem and they replaced 2 of mine no questions asked...

Glad you found a M60 they are great rifles too. The 795 is just a magazine fed M60.
I have 2 Boyds stocks and they are amazing! She will be very happy with one

Excellent choice in a .22LR. You should be able to put hundreds of thousands of rounds through it with no problems.

                  We found one here

We originally went to Dick's in Point Loma thinking they had a 795 but it turned out to be an XT-22. She was really set on semi-auto, and the guy at Dick's said "Hey I was up at DAS yesterday in Solana Beach and they had a Model 60!" Which worked out because that's what she wanted to begin with.

I didn't expect that kind of service from a big retail store.

Also really enjoyed DAS. The guys there are very nice and fair. They had several other semi-auto 22's - Remington 597, high-end 10/22's, S&W 15-22, and a couple others.

Love my Marlin 60, though I quickly upgraded to a scope as the built in sights are not very good. I have seen on the Marlin boards a few suggestions on upgrading to a peep sight also if you don't want to go the scope route.

Chaos 47 thanks for the great advice. I bought brand new in the box. The magazine is a nickel plated, can't miss it because the rifle is black. When I pick it up on the 11th I will know for sure. I fairly sure because I talked about it with the salesman. I remember asking him about 10 rounder and he told me I would have to buy one separately.
How hard is it to thoroughly clean, take it apart, relative to a Saiga 223 which I consider easy. ?

The clerk might just be confused, Marlin bolt actions do come with 7 rounders, but usually the blued ones, and the Pre-88 non-notched ones at that... But it could be a new thing they are doing in response to NY AWB like I mentioned.

To make things more confusing they do make a nickle 7 rounder Post-88.
I would not be totally surprised that it is a 7 rounder, only disappointed.

Marlin has shown great fear in the past when it comes to bans and is prematurely proactive.
The whole reason for the groove in the magazine and stud in the magazine well was to prevent the use of their older Marlin 70 HC 25 round magazines in the 795.

The 795 is very easy to field strip in my opinion.
It is a bit harder to take down what I call the "action" but that is not needed for the usual cleaning. I only take the action apart to do trigger work..

                        To field strip a 795:
Flip it over, unscrew 2 screws from the trigger guard
Lift the guard up and free from the last shot hold open lever and the magazine release
Flip it over again, pull out the receiver, barrel and action in one unit from the stock.
                        Place stock to side
At the rear of the receiver/action remove the large plastic pin
Pull back and down on the action
                        Place action to side.

                        Now comes the tricky part:
You must remove the Bolt by pulling it backwards fighting the recoil spring and rod.
                        Then lift it upward.
The bolt handle is a separate part and will fall away at a point giving you little to hold onto.
You must be careful as you pull the bolt upward and release pressure on the recoil spring.
The reason this is important is because you can bend or kink this spring easily (I have never done it but keep a spare on hand for each 795)

Once you have the bolt removed you are done for a field strip.
That might seem like a lot of steps but I went really in depth about it to help you. Once you have done it its pretty easy.

At this point you will have the following:
                        Receiver and Barrel
                        Action
Trigger guard assembly (guard, trigger and safety)
                        Bolt
                        Bolt Handle
                        Recoil Rod
                        Recoil Spring

Clean the bore with a bore snake as you will not be able to get a rod in from the chamber
Clean the bolt, especially the face.
                        Clean the action
Clean out the trigger guard (unburnt powder collects here, looks like black sand)

I use CLP and wipe it down till its practically dry. I find that too much oil in a 22 just gives grime a place to stick and foul things up.

Reassembly is the same just in reverse, paying special attention to putting the bolt and recoil spring/guide back into place.

It is a modular design but the recoil system makes it not as easy as an AK but not as quirky as say a Ruger MK Pistol..

I have a better designed recoil rod in my mind which I really need to make a prototype of because it would make things soooo much easier...

Thanks for the heads up on CTD!
Haven't been able to find any 10 round mags since Christmas (even at CTD) stopped looking recently so the heads up is really appreciated!
