    10/22 DIY Mods

Just bought my 10/22. I was curious as to what modifications can be done w/o new parts. I already know about the auto-bolt release mod, just dremeling the piece. I certain have all the tools I would ever need (there are tools in my garage from 4 generations, going back to my great-grandpa and great uncle who did a lot of gun stuff).

Note, I won't be doing any mods until after I put rounds through it and get more accustomed to it, so I could be sure of actually benefiting myself in doing so. But I would like to know the possibilities so that after shooting a brick or two, I can maybe improve a few things if I choose to.

Just bought a Takedown. Kidd trigger seems like a coveted but expensive upgrade.
I'm curious about what other people have to say.

I think the auto bolt release is the only easy diy mod to the gun. Maybe some trigger work but it's probably better to just buy a new target hammer kit for $35.

radius the rear of the bolt
        stone the hammer
        auto bolt release
drill & tap trigger for over travel screw stop
drill backside of receiver to allow for a bore brush
        rear tang addition
        Erc

Without new parts...You can do a lot, depending on your skill set & what you'd like to accomplish/attempt. Lots of people do a Trigger Job & are successful! I enjoy taking guns apart, cleaning & maintaining them, but felt safer buying a Trigger. Either way, go shooting & enjoy!

The one mod you might want to pay for is the buffer pin.

mod exiting for auto bolt release as you stated. easy to do
Polish bolt and inside of receiver ( bolt cycles smoother, easy to do with 600-1200 sandpaper)
Polish hammer, sear, disconnector ( videos on how to do this, easy to do, makes trigger smoother at no cost)
I beaded the action with epoxy. Don't know if this was a big improvement, I just did it
                  because I wanted to.
All the above little or no cost, just time.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will probably polish the bolt and receiver at least. I known I ended up polishing the action on my Marlin 336. Easy enough, and worth while with it.

I kinda of enjoy tinkering with things...as a kid I used to take apart anything I could, from my Sega genesis to my dad's powertools...So while I will have fun plinking, it is also fun tinkering. Just don't want to be stupid about it

I replaced the Extractors in my 10/22's and 22/45 with VQ Extractors. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/363...mark-iii-22-45

In addition to all mentioned, I polished the bolt handle shaft (where the long spring rides). Don't if it helped with the overall performance, but it did help sliding back the bold handle during re-assembly. Didn't have to buy the bolt pin buffer. One thing I noticed after all the mods done is that i don't hear/feel that metal noise (maybe the bolt spring) while the bolt is sliding back.

Not sure which 10/22 you got but I've seen a few of them that have benefited greatly from removing the front barrel band. Can't think of anything cheaper or easier to try.
On my wood stock model, it cut the group size in half......
                            No kidding.
I compete with mine as a "sleeper". It looks bone stock. Super light trigger and a set of Tech Sights on it. Gives the $1000 10/22 guys fits

                            Take care,
                            Dave
