M&P 15-22. If you can find one. Or dedicated 22LR from CMMG or Tactical Solutions.

Get the M&P, easier to get mags and parts plus it runs

I would not trade our two CMMGs for 5 15-22s but that is just me. I like the real AR platform that is the CMMG. SW is a plastic gun and the lower is proprietary to it. The CMMG upper is a real AR upper reciever and goes on a real AR lower. It takes all standard AR15 accessories with no modification or adapters. Both of our CMMGs run 100% reliable. The SW is a good enough rifle but the fact of it being plastic and of proprietary design turned me off from them. They seem like a plastic airsoft toy that was converted to shoot .22. I looked at the SW and handled them when we got into the AR22 platform and they were not for me..Also looked at the Colt AR22s and they were quickly eliminated from any consideration right off.

More money to go the CMMG route but very glad I did. Just the two standard lowers the uppers are on are worth gold now.The SW lower does not have that increased value of the lower and never will. When you go the dedicated CMMG upper route you can put a differant upper on the lower too of if you decide to.. Cannot do that with the SW of course.

If as stated you already have a .223 AR 15 you just need a dedicated upper to swap onto it and in a few seconds you can be shooting .22 rimfire on your lower. You could go with a dropin conversion bolt from CMMG for your current upper and that is the cheapest route but accurracy suffers some through a 1 in 9 twist barrel. Dedicated upper is the way to go if you can swing it financially.

Like everything right now however, finding anything to purchase at all is going to be a challenge

          Goodluck whatever you decide..

The flip side of dedicated uppers only is that you're neuterring what could be a "real" AR lower in order to run .22lr. It's all a matter of perspective and what you have available in your firearms inventory. Plus the unlocking/locking of bullet buttons when you change calibers. I have no issue with those that prefer dedicated uppers and hope they would in turn understand some buyers don't want to bother with swapping uppers.

The S&W M&P 15-22 is the best turn key (i.e. walk in and buy a complete rifle) option for a complete .22 AR trainer generally available and it's light weight makes it handy for women and children too. I don't want heavy rails or tons of add-ons for it. Just a light handy ultra-reliable trainer with a rail I can put optics on. I was fortunate to pick up an MOE version before the current buying frenzy.

Look up taccom's ULW upper. Way more accurate then my cmmg uppers, and super light.

The 15-22 is perfect trainer for an AR, even the bolt release works which isn't the case on some of the other rimfires AR's.

It's also great for kids as the stock adjusts to fit the "operator".

I picked up a Colt ar15 opps in 22 for the Grandkids to shoot. I was very happy to find out it eats the cheep ammo. 700 rds through it so far and no problems. good luck

Do not know about metal ones. My Sons have the plastic ones.

Both our CMMGs have Last Round Bolt Hold Open and functional Foward assist. Not neccesary to have em but you do have the option with the CMMG. Maybe changing uppers is a problem as far as California Law. But it takes me about 30 seconds to change one upper to the next. Good thing is if things ever get back to normal, not likely but we can hope, you can assemble a lower for the upper in time and use your current one for now.

Believe me a Dedicated is a much better long term investment than a Propriety design AR22 Rifle is. Our lowers we bought for the uppers have went up in value atleast five times what we have in them. Maybe that value will lessen but it more likely will not and probaly will double that value soon.

Tim at Taccom does have some nice stuff too. We have one of his barrels, pressure plugs and enhanced firing pins. His barrel is a little more accurrate than the CMMG but by very little. It is very, very light. With one of his barrels, rifle length JP aluminum handguard and a Magpul ACS stock one of our CMMGs weighs right at 5.5 pounds. Thats with a real aluminum upper and lower reciever. Tims barrels weigh in at less than a pound

No experience with his complete uppers but if they are anything close to the quality of his other stuff they will be great.

Adjustable stocks are pretty much standard on all AR15s. If you want a trainer you can assemble a CMMG to look, act and mimic your AR15 to a tee, minus the cost of the ammo and felt recoil. Only in places that have restrictions do you see a non adjustable fixed stock on an AR15 or AR22..

In the end you are the one that has to make the decision and spend the money. Just trying to give what useless info I have

I went with the 15/22, but I'd personally rather have 2 rifles instead of 1 rifle and 2 uppers. That's just me though.

I will tell you that my 15/22 is the favorite rifle of both my sons. I know it has well over 11k rounds and never had any issues. Just oil it up and feed it ammo.

If you don't mind proprietary mags for the M&P go for it. Personally, I HATE proprietary stuff.

Yes 22 in the AR platform is very fun and addicting. We have in excess of probably 10,000 rounds through each, have to slow down now as the damn ammo is just getting hard to get. Who would have ever thought that about the lowly rimfire ammo.

Not being proprietary is a really great thing about the CMMG route. You can swap the barrel and bolt assembly and it can become a 5.56 upper. Or buy another upper in 5.56. That is one big reason too we went the dedicated route. As the kids mature they can get a 5.56 upper too and have both calibers in a few seconds to swap the uppers over.

Just one last thing. I have never dealt with SW on any warranty issues and I am sure they have great customer service but CMMGs is one of the best in the buisness. They warranty you for lifetime..
