My 17/22 grenaded today

I put about 40 rnds down range today and let a friend get behind it to check it out, then about 4 rnds in I see the mag blow out of the bottom in pieces with smoke all over
He's OK just took a little flash to the face, good thing he had safety glasses on

Oh wow, so a round got stuck in the barrel? So do you think it was due to the barrel getting hot and expanding, thus lowering the internal diameter or due to a bad round? Really glad no one got hurt.

Ship it back and have them rebarrel to 22 mag.

There is a reason almost all companies stopped making semi auto's in HM2 and HMR. Way too many people were having cracked cases from the guns firing slightly out of battery. I believe it is due to the recoil spring being too weak and the mass of the bolt not being high enough. The only company that is still making an semi auto 17hm2/r in the 10/22 design is Volquartsen. Most every other company offered an re-barrel recall (including Ruger for the 22 magnum version).

The bolt on my Vq is close to 3 times as heavy as the stock 10/22 version, it has run 1500 rounds without an hiccup.

Ship it back and have them rebarrel to 22 mag.

They would re-barrel it in 22LR not magnum (it's an Hm2 not an HMR).

No recall on this one that I know of but I will check with the manufacture
This one is done by magnum research and I've never had a problem up until now
It's based off of the 10/22 with top notch parts and the ammo is made by eley
My plan now is to rebuild with Kidd parts and go with 22lr, better safe than sorry

though it does not sound like it would, when you heat that barrel up the bore size actually grows.

My money is on a ruptured case, with the tear starting right where the extractor sits on the base..

17cal semi autos were ALL recalled to my knowledge, call up the company that sold you that ammo. I bet you they wont be concerned at all if you tell them it was a semi auto. 17s have far too much pressure and not enough material in them.

not by very much. The real part (and why we use chrome lining in ARs) is you can potentially wear your rifling out. The rifling gets hot and wears faster.

Sounds about right I believe that
To bad there was nothing left of the casing but there was damage on the opposite side in the stock the size of the base of the casing

I've seen this several times with .22lr rimfire. It can happen with any rimfire, the case blows out, all the powder and power is blown out the ejection port/mag well, and the bullet, not having enough "oomph" stops somewhere in the barrel. The only damage I've ever seen done in these situations is 10/22's blowing the extractor out. If you shoot rimfires enough, your going to see this sooner or later. Make sure your run a rod down the barrel to make sure the bullet didnt stick.
