.22 AR, Which is best?

Id mostly use it for range plinking/fun, but don't want to spend a lot of $$$ if I don't "have to."

Im going to Big 5 tomorrow and the 3 I had in mind are:

M&P 15-22 $470ish
Mossberg tactical $260ish
Colt $500ish

Any other recomendations? Mossberg vs Smith & Wesson, etc.

i'd go with the m&p over the colt and i'd definitely go with the M&P over the mossberg. The mossberg isn't that appealing to me.

I know the M&P was designed from the ground up as a rimfire rifle. I have one and love it. I have had some feeding issues, but that was my fault for not loading the magazines right.

Best 22lr AR is the Spikes ST-22. Too bad they do not offer the complete rifle anymore only the upper. OK I know it's over kill but what the heck.........

My choice out of those would be the M&P. You can always customize a 10/22 (or similar) to an AR style. I did that for budget reasons, as well as customization options. I've recently been interested in the Sig 522 SWAT too. A bit pricey, but looks awesome.

spikes has been taken over by the CMMG stuff in the ceiner scene.

OP I would look into a CMMG dedicated 22 build. Most realistic 22 ar you will be able to get. And most accurate out of the box as well.

Yes if you are stuck on those 3 the SW is is the obvious choice. I too however would look into putting together a CMMG. Maybe a CMMG bolt and a Taccom barrel. Like this. All metal upper and lower. No plastic here and uses all standard AR15 parts. People say the SW is so light. Well this is right at 5.5 pounds and not made of plastic.

I own both a M&P 15-22 (actually two of them) and a Colt (Umarex - Walther) M4 Ops. The Colt is a great rifle, but if your looking for and actual a actual AR type rifle the M&P 15-22 hands down. Plus I think the Colt seems a little over priced even when it's on sale. I have shot the Mossberg and it's just not for me. It shot great, no issues, just doesn't have the feel of something I can let my boys or my wife shoot and not have to worry about it. Hard to explain, just doesn't have that quality feel, to me. If I didn't have a 5.56 AR (or several) I would go with a standard AR lower and the dedicated upper .22 so I could get a 5.56 upper someday.

But if you have a 5.56 AR already (or several) the S&W M&P 15-22 is great. Factory warranty, no hassle of building it, runs great, and super light to teach your kids or grand kids to shoot with. I have the MOE version and love it.
