Coyotes are all about shot placement with the .22!

I've dropped deer with one .22 shot at about 125 yards. But, I was young, broke, hungry and stupid. A .22 can take a 'yotes at 100 yards without a problem if the shooter does his/her part.

That's 100 yards of suffering that can be avoided by using a better suited round.

...Coyote is thinking small...My Grand dad used to tell me stories about how he and his buddies would drop them deer "like nothing" back in the day with his old mossberg .22lr. But in my opinion, nothing is better then rabbit and squirrel huntin with a 22. I started with a ruger 10/22 and up to 8 .22s MkII, MKIII, MkIII LITE, Browning buckmark, 10/22, 1955 MINT Mossberg bolt action, 10/22, H&R revolver .22/22mag. Here is one we dropped last summer at 35 yards. As for ammo...stick with CCI or Federal. All my stuff runs best on it

.22WMR is bare minimum for a very small coyote. And even thats pushing it. Most people aren't as good a shot as they think they are.

I hunt grouse with a 22 pistol... Theyre dumb enough to just stand there and let you take your time for a head shot....

Plus you dont ruin the meat with all the birdshot...

While the .22 LR is capable of taking a fully grown sow under 50 yards, this is only practical for VERY good shooters. If you can't hit a 1.5 square inch target EVERY time at that range, you are not hunting ethically. The same can be said for the .22 WMR out to 100 yards. You also need to be sure you know where the brain is located in the coyote, pig, and similar larger sized animals. Many quadrupeds are tough enough to survive multiple holes through their cheeks/jaws, at least in the short term. BTW, hunting deer with anything less than a centerfire cartridge is illegal in every state I know of.

They may be able to do that at the range under perfect conditions. But how about standing in the woods? Under those conditions I'd say that effective range goes down to 20-30 yards max with OK accuracy.

In which case a .38/.357 levergun would be a much better choice. Just my 2c.
