Odd 10/22 question

So finally after getting to the range and shooting my new 10/22, I found out I was having light strikes. About 3 rounds of the 10 round factory mag would look like it was barely struck by the firing pin.
But here's the weird part: It only happened with 1 of my 2 mags. I fired about 300 rounds and every time I used the mag that came with the rifle I got a couple light strikes.
Yeah simple fix, Don't use that mag anymore.
But why would the magazine have anything to do with the hammer not hitting the rim hard enough?

Bone stock, brand new 10/22 stainless/synthetic with the one factory black mag (which is the only time I have the light strikes) and then the clear factory mag.

Just speculating, but a feed problem from a bad magazine could prevent the bolt from going completely into battery which could cause light primer strikes.....

That's pretty much my experience with problematic mags. Basically, the bolt drags over or along some protrusion from the mag and slows the bolt down too much in its forward cycle, hence not completely in battery. The hammer will force the bolt closed, but there is not enough energy to fully strike the firing pin.

It probably won't work and there will be "haters" here that will scold me for suggesting this idea but here it goes:

How about taking the $16.00 factory 10 round magazine that is giving you problems and conducting some sick "medical" experiments with it. If the experiment doesn't work, no harm, no foul. Just toss that one magazine in the trash when you're done with it. Take your "surgical" tools (Dremel tool) and polish the steel lips just a bit and see if that solves your problem. Don't take off too much metal on the magazine, just a light polishing with the proper Dremel bit for the job.

As someone else pointed out, you may have a bolt failure-to-close problem, causing the striker to make light strikes on the .22 rim. Perhaps the feed lips have some burr or are just too darn tight and need a little polishing to smooth them out. That might allow the bolt to slide "home" properly.

Again, even if that doesn't solve the problem and you ruin the magazine, at least you gave it a shot and can chalk one up for "science." In the end, you have nothing to loose because you've identified that it boils down to the one "bad" magazine already in your inventory.

take a look at the feed ramp at the front of the magazine. Sometimes you'll find a burr or machine marks that will hang up or slow down the round as it's being fed into the chamber. Polish that smooth and your problem may go away.

Paul- I sort of cleaned it... I took the stock off and trigger group out and wiped down the open bolt with a slightly oiled rag.

Thank you dan/trailerpark I'll give it a go and see what happens. I don't have anything to lose really. Its already a junky mag.

Did you clean your brand new rifle before using?

Clean the chamber...may have some cosmoline/shipping/manufacturing gunk in there. Should always push a rod through the bore on a new rifle to clean out any junk and insure no blockages.

Also, check/clean/oil the firing pin in the bolt. Should move f/b easily and protrude about .030-.035 almost to the front face of the bolt. Make sure the bolt closes fully, no burrs on the receiver or barrel face spacing it back.

Compare the 2 mags for any obvious differences. Lucky if its the mag b/c its a cheap part to replace!

Well I checked the mags and they look identical. The problem mag feels just as smooth as the clear one.

Ron solo.... I think that's a good idea. Heck if I didn't buy that other mag I'd assume my whole rifle was messed up. Maybe I can score a new mag lol.

tanakasan... I actually still haven't broken down the rifle any more. I'll get on it and report back soon hopefully.

Maybe your new rifle just needs some more rounds put thru it---take it out and shoot the crap out of it!
