    Ruger 10/22 Ammo question

Pardon the Newb type question, but if I don't ask I'll won't know...
I bought a Ruger 10/22 LR and I'm not sure what the recommended, or more accurately what the best ammo for this rifle is. What's good for target practice and best for defense.
    Thanks

CCI mini mags are the "go to" ammo...especially for breaking in the rifle.

But since every .22 is different, try various brands/types to see what your setup likes. Thats part of the fun!

Mine eats anything, period. Buy whats cheap, I like the bulk pack boxes of Federal from Wallmart. Dunns has it on sale sometimes as well.

Buy as many 50rd boxes of different types as you can, find out what feeds most consistently and what has the best accuracy, then figure out which has the best compromise of both at a price your wallet can afford.

My brand of choice is CCI Blazer 525 Value packs

Match the ammo to the rifle, to the purpose and your skill level. Don't buy $30 per 50 Tenex if the equipment and you are not up to that level. Good start for accurate target ammo is CCI SV or a little better would be Wolf Match Target or SK Std + both made by Lapua in Germany.

Another to try is American Eagle 38gr HP HV. Good luck with your choices. Yeah and I've read that a lot of folks do break in with CCI Mini Mags. If you do test different ammos make sure you at least run a bore snake thru the barrel between different ammo.

^^^This. If MiniMag 40gr solids won't cycle there is a problem with the gun. I just did a comparison with mine & found that it really likes the Remington Golden bulk that everybody else seem to hate.

I used CCI Mini Mags as well for the first 1000 rounds and now I have 250 rounds of CCI Blazer bulk ammo through it. Both work great!

Like the above, but stick with the ammo you can find locally in decent amounts.
                    If you're paying more'n $7 bucks for a box of 50, I'd steer clear...

CCI Blaser, Winchester 555, and the corresponding Federal
are the Holy Grail of Cheap bulk ammo to discover what your rifle really likes.
                    (mine likes blaser)

CCI Velocitor and the corresponding 40 grain hollow point that Winchester makes seem to be the most lethal rounds-around.
Whether they are accurate in your particular file remains to be seen.

CCI mini mag but my regular ammo I shoot is Wolf MT or SK subsonic.

I have had my current 10/22 for 5yrs and if I had to guess, well over 5000rds through it.
No issues with brand of .22lr, seems to eat them all. I just buy what I can on the cheap. Bulk boxes of American Eagle, Blazer, Winchester, and even Remington, the rifle eats them all up. Mind you this is a mostly stock rifle as far as internals go. The only mods to it are a Tapco stock, larger mag release, and a pull of the charging handle to release mod. Guts of the rifle are as factory.
                          At 50yds I consistantly keep all 10rds on a 1" shoot-n-see

I see approximately 200 different 10/22's on my line every year at Appleseed.

There's no consistent pattern. Different rifles like different ammo. Try a few and see if you get better or worse results.

It's rare for there to be enough accuracy difference that you'd notice. Most of the difference is that some will feed / extract better than others in a particular rifle.

Eley is among the best, but expensive. CCI tends to be reliable, also more expensive, but I've seen a few rifles that wouldn't feed it. I've had good luck recently with Armscor and Winchester bulk packs. Try a bunch and have fun!

My 10/22 and S&W M&p 15-22 like 40 grain CCI Minimag solids best. No failures to feed, fire or eject in either rifle with over 1000 rounds each. It is also the most accurate out of about 10 or 12 different loads in the Ruger. I don't know how many rounds is has through it, I bought it used a couple of months ago and it was made in the 1970's. The S&W has only had the minimags and Winchester's M22 bulk stuff through it, 1000 of the minimags and 500 of the Winchester. The M22 is my second choice, it has proven as reliable as the CCI and almost as accurate in both guns and the price works out to about 4.5 cents per round. The CCI is almost 2 cents per round more expensive. Not a lot, but every little bit helps.
