    just got a 10/22 - what do I 'need'?

I've been musing about a 10/22, and on the last day of the Turner's sale, I bought one (synthetic stock). I have a few handguns and an AR, so am trying to figure out what I need to pick up. It's mostly going to be used for plinking, unfortunately mostly indoors due to time restraints. I'm new to rimfire and the 10/22, so I could use some help.

    1. If I have a bore snake in .223, do I need one for .22lr? I'm assuming so.
    2. Anyone have recommendations for mags? I was told that the Ruger mags aren't that much more expensive than aftermarket. Anything to stay away from?
    3. I saw a pic with a three magazine holder (puts them in a triangular position). What's this called, and anyone like them or have a better suggestion?
    4. Any suggestions for website to peruse for well priced stuff? I'm thinking maybe of getting a picatinny rail and slide on my (very) old bushnell red dot sight at some point.
    5. Any other things I 'need'?

    Thanks - I appreciate it.

I haven't switched to boresnakes yet, but many love them. I'm happy when I can buy a factory mag for around $10. I've picked them up CDNN for that price before and with decent shipping costs.

You'll need enough bricks of ammo to build a large wall. Congratulations!

The answer to number 3 is trimag.

I bought 6 extra mags from Walmart for my 10 22 @ $15 a piece and that is all I really needed for it. I love my 10 22 it is my favorite rifle to shoot I put a Simmons AO scope on mine 3-9-38 and it is awesome.

.223 boresnake should be marked for .22 also.
The gun is redicluly easy to work on, but if you don't want to go down the upgrade pathos which gets expensive see below
            My suggestions:
            Auto bolt release mod
            Tuffer buffer bolt buffer
Volquartsen target hammer mod (lightens up trigger pull and smooths is out nicely for $30.
That is about $55 in upgrade parts and should tide you over.
More mags = better and a metric **** ton of federal blue box bulk.

Or do like I did and buy $400 woth of parts before you pick up the gun and enjoy

shoot, clean, shoot more and more. i had a tricked out 22lr camo ,tactical. after i finished playing with it i sold it. i like my savage 64 simi auto and savage bolt mark FV heavy barrel with only a scope on them. the ruger 10-22 is a great rifle the way it is.

You can slide your red dot onto the scope mount that comes in the box with the gun.
A sling...more for shooting than carrying.
Proper use of a sling makes it much easier to hold the gun steady, meaning better and more consistent accuracy.

Just shoot it for now. Medium term, you may want to look into one of the inexpensive (i.e. $40 or so) trigger parts kits to smooth and lighten the pull. Spare mags are never a bad thing. I've used Eagle (supposed to be junky but I've had no issues) and Butler Creek as well as the Ruger ones.

Shoot it a bunch and then decide if you want to do any upgrades (barrels, sights, stocks, etc.).

                        Thanks for all the replies!

I think short term, I'll get a trimag, a total of 3 mags and I think I have a spare 3 point sling around somewhere. The red dot may go on after I get comfortable with the iron sights.

I also agree that I need to see how I like the gun stock before playing with it.

Why do you guys suggest a bolt buffer, and why the Tuffer Buffer in particular?

FWIW, my bud gave me a laundry list of "must do's" when I told him I got the 10-22 TD. I countered that I'd like to fire the piss out of it to see how she runs before I go changing things. He looked at me like I was crazy.
It was not a threat. It was an exaggerated response to an uncompromising stance. I was taught never to make a threat unless you are prepared to carry it out and I am not a fan of carrying anything. Even watching other people carrying things makes me uncomfortable. Mainly because of the possibility they may ask me to help.

+1 on the automatic bolt release, that is a must. You can buy the part or modify the part.

Other than that, I think the rest is just preference.
On top of the bolt release, I just did these two:
Volquartsen trigger <-trigger is flat, and has a over-travel screw.
Kidd Bolt Buffer <- it just reduces noise, no metal to meal clank.

For the magazine, go with the clear ones, just as reliable as the black ones, just looks cool.
Magazine & Alangator, both on sale at midway until 06/30, use a coupon code if you can =)

I skipped on the Alangator, it just looks too weird installed, hahaha.
