Anybody have any experience with the USGI M261 22 Lr conversion Kit for M16-AR15's? Do they work any better or worse then the civilian conversion kits?

USGI M261 22lr conversion kit question.

I've had my m261 kit since the early 90s and have fired tens of thousands of rounds through it. I bought mine from SARCO it was brand new and unused and I think I paid $80 for it and it came with 3 10 round mag liners. When I first got mine I had some issues with it but I sanded it down to remove the machining marks and smoothed out all up. I shoots great and I would take a m261 kit over any other kits in a heartbeat. Btw, m261 kits are hard to come by and command a premium price. Blackdog makes 26 round mags for the m3
261. I picked up a few BD mags a few months ago and had to team them to make them reliable but now they run 100%. The USGI mag liners are great to.Last edited by Mac Attack; 06-14-2012, 8:53 PM. -
Thanks for the info, I hadn't seen these kits before and just saw some for sale and didn't know anything about them. I have a new 22lr kit from Brownells, it doesn't say who made it though. I still haven't used it, based on some comments there are issues with the commercial kits. I though maybe a "broken in" USGI kit would be a better idea. I've got 3 Black Dog mags. so they should work with the M261 ok?Comment

Unless your BDM mags are specifically for the M261 kit they will not work. The M261 kit uses special mags and they are not compatible with any other conversion kits as far as I know. If you already have a commercial kite and mags unless you have problems written your existing kit I wouldn't change anything.Comment

If you google m261 magazines you will find that Black Dog does make magazines for it. They will also work with the OA kits.Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

My mag inserts are ultra reliable. My BDM mags after some filing to lower the feedramps they now run great. However the USGI mags are the best.Comment

Those would be my preference but seems like the inserts might be hard to come by. Sarco doesn't list them but their site said they were selling all the spare parts overseas.Comment

i got one and i cant get it to work right it every bullet seems to stop right before chambering and when the hammer drops it just causes it to seat i too got mine from sarco years ago i got 4 of the inserts too and they all act identical
and ammo doesnt matter rem win fed cci all the same
i can drop a round in the chamber and it goes right in i'm baffled
the bdm mags almost made my gun work i had to do lots of filing to get the bdm mags to fit in the well
at least with the inserts there is a bit of play
also i found i could use the inserts in the ar-stoner 10 rounders by removing the follower then worm the upside down spring up around the insert and have it lock it in placeComment

A thread on another Fourm mentions "shaving" of the bullets before falure to seat the bullet. It mentions maybe the bottom lip of the chamber might need to be ramped alittle better.i got one and i cant get it to work right it every bullet seems to stop right before chambering and when the hammer drops it just causes it to seat i too got mine from sarco years ago i got 4 of the inserts too and they all act identical
