Great rifle. I like that it has a larger capacity than the 795 (esp. my older 17-rounder) and is easier on the fingers after many reloads than the 795 mags. The downside is that you have to fill the tube every time; you can't just switch out a mag.

Marlin model 60 any good?

RED VASQUEZ,I've been thinking about buying a .22 semi auto for some cheap plinking and found this:
I shot a lot of tube magazine .22s as a kid, and I like the fact that it has a 14 round capacity versus a ten round box. The last-round-lockback also seems like a nice feature.
So I ask: Any Calgunners own one of these? Hows the quality of these rifles? Dependability? Low/high maintenance? I'd appreciate any advice you could offer.
The Marlin model 60 has been around for years and is one of the better valued priced rifles around. Mine doesn't have sling swivels but is a great rifle for field usage. Yeah there are others on the market but nothig beats it forthe value.

Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

Can't go wrong with a Model 60. The only knock on the Model 60 in my eyes is the trigger. It gets better with age but will never be anywhere near is good as one of the aftermarket offering available for the 10/22.
This is the only rear upgrade to the Marlin trigger which is supposed to offer a little benefit over the stock plastic one. I will try one of these soon.
One major benefit of the Marlin is the fact that it is tube fed. 22's by their nature are something that get fed very high volumes of ammo each range session. I don't know about you guys, but loading .22's starts to really suck after about 5 or 6 mags. With the Marlin, one twist of a Spee'd Loader (see pic) and you have 14 rounds ready to roll.
One last suggestion, don't over-scope the rifle. One reason is to obvioulsy keep the weight down. Also, keeping the scope objective to 28mm or lower coupled with low scope rings leads to a much nicer check weld. I am partial to the Leupold 2x7 rimfire scope. I cannot see any reason going over x7 for shots inside 100yds.
Reliable, accurate, blah, blah, blah. All that stuff has already been mentioned so I won't.
Oh yea, last thing, Turners always has Marlins on-sale for around $150. Gotta like that.

Marlin 60, I liked my first one so much I bought a second. The first one is a stainless and is scope mounted it has a longer barrel. The second has a carbine length barrel and is normal used with peep sights. Great accuracy with both, and I can shoot the target ammo in both.
Speed-e-loader is a big help.Comment

Marlin 60 stainless is absolutely one of my favorite guns on the planet. I own 3 marlins. A Model 60, a "Revelation by Western Auto Parts" which is a model 60 renamed, and a Marlin 795. I love all 3 guns for different reasons but I would pick one up in a heartbeat if you get a chance to. They're more accurate than any 10/22 out of the box (flame suit on) and aftermarket is pretty good. Not great, but good. If you want to take one out of the box, put on a cheap scope and have a fun day, marlin is the way to go. If you want to make a tack driving monster bench gun, get a 10/22.Comment

There aren't nearly as many mods for the Model 60 as for the 10/22. My early 1980's vintage Model 60 shoots anything I feed it (CCI std velocity to Walmart bulk pack). The one that belonged to my late father-in-law is a bit more finicky, and I'm still trying things with it.
Two of the mods that I've done to mine are a Boyd's thumbhole stock and a DIP trigger. The only shots I have of it are a couple of lousy cell phone photos.

This is before I added the DIP trigger

Thanks everyone for the great advice, and very nice rifles you all have. Hopefully after payday I'll have enough fun money to buy one of my own. Think I'll be getting the wooden stock since it looks like a 10/22 stock can be modded to fit later on."I don't facebook, I Calguns"~MeComment

Love my Model 60 and my 10/22's. Maybe you should have both. 10/22's can have 25 round clips in other states. They can be purchased in Nevada, I think? There are Butler Creek 25 round clips that can be glued together easily and viola 50 rounds with one extraction and rotation of the clips. There is also a drum magazine for the 10/22. Why can't we have that much fun here in California? Like I said, I like them both equally, but if you cannot get er done in 10, then maybe you shouldn't shoot a rifle. Personally, I believe in one shot kills and bolt action is the best.Comment
