Truthfully if it is your first 10/22 and you're asking us then a high performance parts kit is last on the list.

If I had to recommend anything it would be aperture sights (tech-sights or Nodak Spud's NDS-26 & NDS-40). Triggers and bolt release are all great, but you can't hit what you can't aim at.

Learn to shoot then shoot the heck out of it.

After that, it is a 10/22...sky is the limit.

If you are mechanical at all, search for 10/22 trigger jobs and make your stock trigger as good as the boughten ones. So you save some money and become way more familiar with your gun as far as disassembly, cleaning, how it works, etc. At the same time do the auto bolt release. And go have fun, you could add a scope, a fancy barrel to make it more accurate, lighter, or heavier. Fancy stock at the same time. The possibilities are endless, and if don't like something, you can always sell the upgrade and go back to stock.

Ok, maybe I'm asking a goofy question in response to your question.

Do you feel that your stock rifle is holding you back?

Changing parts when there isn't a problem does what exactly? Are you a good shot? Can you tell the difference between stock and an aftermarket component? Does it make a difference in your shooting? Are you adding Ferrari parts to your Accord?

I say shoot the heck out of it so you know what you're looking for (several votes for that in this thread). Several stories about, "I blinged it out now I'm back to stock". All that happened for a reason...

No right or wrong answer...just a couple of the paths cost more time and money.

I went from a regular plain jane $199 special 10/22 in blued/wood to

          1. Tapco Gen1 Intrafuse Stock ($80)
          2. Tapco VFG ($20)
          3. Cheap Barska Red Dot ($30)
          4. Cheap UTG Flashlight ($20)
          5. Cheap UTG Bipod ($20)
          6. ProMag Marauder ($190)
          7. Magpul AFG ($35)

spent a total of $395 + tax (more like $425)

ended up selling/junking all of it and now it looks like this:

if i didn't waste all that money on that other crap, i could have got a nice bull barrel and .920 channel stock

but alas this is more fun for me to shoot in this form

nicely done. i'm also on the same boat. i know my 16 platform fairly well, but since i wanted to go shooting for cheap, i went ahead and bought a 10/22, the same as chang's here. can't wait to pick up this saturday and fiddle with it. court it like a girlfriend. lol. pay attention to it that is.

I recently picked up a 10/22 myself, and I'll agree with those that say shoot it first. Then decide what upgrades you want to make based on what you do/don't like.

              1. Personally, the original wood stock does not fit me very well - ill even say it was uncomfortable after several mags - so I have one coming eventually (dang midway pushed my back order out another month after their original back-in-stock estimate).

              2. I have pretty big mitts, so I added a larger bolt handle which is much more comfortable - it also smoothed out the bolt a little (added bonus)

              3. Also did a home job on the bolt catch with a dremel. If you ask me, the Ruger design is cumbersome and counterintuitive. Not a huge deal, but it bothered me. The auto release makes the rifle a little easier to use.

              4. I'm looking into glass currently, as I'll be running this with a scope.

              Down the road:
              - bull barrel
              - trigger job or drop-in
              - comp?
              - butt pad (depending on new stock LOP, comfort)

I consider it a work-in-progress. Probably won't ever be truly "done" - much like my AR

              Have fun!
