my recommendation as being a 10/22 owner...

        don't tacticool it up.

i went through a phase of that, and realized that if i really wanted a tacticool .22, then i should have bought one already in that form.

Not that tacticool 10/22s are horrible.....but the 10/22 is just better in more or less the same form it came in

I think it'll be much easier to find out if you want to do anything with it after that I don't own a 10/22 but my cousin has a synthetic stock one(still stock but he doesn't really shoot much anymore) and I think the thing is pretty awesome in it's out of box configuration. I don't shoot it often but the controls on it are tricky for me. I would probably get these two if I didn't get used to it after a while:
          Extended mag release:

Auto-bolt release part or just modify the stock one so you can just lock it back easier:

If I had to do just the one mod it would be the auto-bolt release. I changed out the hammer & sear spring & auto-bolt release.

Dothe auto bolt mod with a dremel tool, put Tech Sites on it if you are staying with iron sites. Otherwise, shoot a case of ammo through it then decide if you want to change anything.

mchang, you should consider a new stock, turn your 10/22 into a true tack driver and a piece of art at the same time. With one of my stocks you would truely have a one of a kind.

I was just going to ask a similar question in here. I can't decide how to build up mine. Check out rimfirecentral.com you'll see so many ideas you will end up like me and not know which route to take. Good luck and happy plinking!

The auto bolt release is the only mod I felt the need to make. The extended mag release isn't needed on the newer models unless you are doing some competition shooting where you are changing mags quickly.

Shoot it a lot before deciding what modifications you want to make.

I have the one with fiber optic sights. I'm considering the KIDD trigger job kit which I believe includes the bolt holdback.

                        Smart Move!

The $105 KIDD drop in (trigger job) does NOT come with auto bolt holdback release (but can be order at same time for $10)

The $235 single stage and $290 two stage comes as a complete trigger assembly (with auto bolt hold back release and mag release)

What I'm going to do to my Ruger 10/22 is a new hammer for 30 bucks (supposed to reduce trigger pull to 2.75-2.5 lbs) and then the TSR-200 aperture sights. I would recommend the hammer no matter what and the sights depends on if you want a scope or not

The bolt release mod is well worth it.
Even if you have to buy the part instead of modding your own.
I bought the Volquartsen extractor to eliminate the occasional stove pipe issue.
Not going to do anything else until I've shot at least 2 bricks of bulk ammo through it.

If you buy the Tech sights, get this knob for easier adjusting:
DPMS Rear Sight Base Rapidex Windage Knob AR-15
They look great on my wood stock 10/22.

Like others I have tacticooled mine out and finally went back to stock. I have a auto bolt release and tech sights TSR-100. these were the only two mods I feel are worthwhile for everyday plinking.
