If he can be patient watch for a used one.

I lucked into a K-22 Combat Masterpiece for $300 a couple of months ago.

You never know what will turn up on the used gun market but you've got to be patient.

Keep an eye out for a used Smith or Dan Wesson.

+1 on a used Smith or Dan Wesson. If you can find a Colt, that would also be great.

I have a couple of Smith Model 17's and a Dan Wesson .22 revolver. If I found one for $400, I'd probably buy it as well.

Ruger Convertable .22 selling for $400 not including fees, tax etc!

              From 4" to 9.5" barrels!

9.5" is on my wish list.

+1 ruger and smith are the way to go, my local gunsmith friend says he has to return half of the taurus guns that they sell. (probably exagerrated a little, but still) Apparently the company is good about taking them back and fixing them or sending a new gun, but i heard some bad stories, and don't even get me started on the heritage POS. I have one and have dealt with the company, sure it is american made... but damn when they call it a Rough Rider, there should be emphasis on the ROUGH. Don't know the current price of a single six, but then you've got the 22 mag option too, with fixed sights for the cowboy look, or the blocky "target" sights. But can't go wrong with a smith either.

Anybody want to trade a smith for a heritage?

                    Ain't that fer true.

Got my "ugly-ducklin'" (that looks just like this pic.) at a pawn-shop a while back.

                    High Standard Sentinel R-100 9-shot double-action .22LR w/ a 3" Bbl.

                    $150.00
                    - 50% off sale
                    $75.00

The bore was full of what looked like rust that the on-site gunsmith couldn't get out w/ a bore brush...

...so they dropped the price to $50.00.

After I got it home, I soaked the bore in Hoppe's for an hour and then ran a 5.56mm stainless steel military bore brush through it... once.

The bore was pristine, and had just been coated w/ some sort of caramelized resin.

                    Shoots tea-cups off-hand at 15 yards...

                    (also got a NIB c. 1980's 20 ga. Rem 870 Wingmaster w/ a 28" mod. choke vented rib Bbl... for $125.00)

I've been wanting a single-ten for several months but now looking at the other suggestions here.

                        - I see two one being much more, around 700 from Ruger. What is the difference between the two?

I Like that suggestion for this situation. We're talking about a new shooter with a budget. .22LR is the right caliber to develop good technique and this manufacturer has established a beachhead in this arena. He can spend more, true. Or he can purchase this Single Action revolver and focus on making each round count while putting the price difference towards his follow up gun. Then he would have a head start on say a .357 Ruger Single Action or whatever he gravitates towards.

It's a cool genre of guns with it's own sub culture.

Take the Heritage for less than $200, and spend the rest on ammo. altho not pretty It shoots every bit as well as my Single six.

If someone is new, why must it be a revolver? Think about a pistol to save money and gain fun. A Ruger MkIII is excellent, below $400 OTD and keep for 100 years. Or the new Ruger SR22 which everyone is raving about, $350 range. A person can always return to the revolver world later if he likes shooting and increases the budget.

As long as im hijacking the thread i might as well complete the sin and say dont buy any of these, get a .22 rifle which is easier to learn and handle, half the budget and then there is room for accessories, cleaning kits and ammo. A Ruger 10/22 fits the bill, as do others, and hold their value well.
