Help me pick a .22!

I'm looking to purchase a .22 in the very near future, however I cannot choose.

I'm not sure if a pistol or rifle would suit me better.

It will be only for fun, so it will only see range time. Will be shooting it anywhere from 15-75 yards.

I'm looking to keep it under $400, the cheaper the better.

Please don't suggest the Ruger Takedown as I know many will.

How about the normal Rugar 10/22? Turners has it for $209 right now (spring sale flyer) and after the tax and fees you'd still have about $150 left for accessories.

Bolt Action: Add Savage to the mix.

For the OP, go to a gunshop and handle all the rifles and pick the one that feels the best. For a pistol, good luck shooting it @75yds. While some may be able to do it, not many. Pistol accuracy (due to short sight radius) gets iffy past 25yds unless you have a scope with magnification and then good luck holding the pistol steady enough to hit anything. Opinions differ, this is just mine.

Agreed the MK series seems nice, I just don't see it pushed as much as others.
I like the looks of the TR model (I have practically the same Boyds stock on my 795)

I would not advocate the Savage semi auto though. Really no reason to get a 64 over a 795 imo

And I know someone will come along and say that the Sig Mosquito should be on the pistols list. Sorry they have the worst trigger I have ever felt on any gun period.
Walther P22 I have never shot but I have seen photos of ones with cracked slides..
GSG 22 1911 I dont know enough about, seems to have good reviews. Too bad the CA ver. has to have the welded on thread protector..

Get a 10/22..a normal one. Or look at some Marlins.

If you want a handgun, GSG, Ruger SR22 or 22/45.

Savage if you want bolt action, and M&P 15-22 for your "tacticool" needs.

there are other options but these are the best for starting and having immediate fun.

My suggestion is that you wait until the Shooting Fair in June and get out there and try lots of products. Corona is an easy drive from Irvine and it's a ton of fun. For rifles I'd try a Ruger 10/22, I'd shoot a couple of scoped Savage MkII rifles, and I'd try a CZ455. For handguns I'd try a Browning Buck Mark and a Ruger 22/45. Turners is a co-sponsor and always has special sale prices for the fair.

If you go with a rifle I highly recommend taking an appleseed class. They're held about 3-4 times a year at the same location as the fair.

they make a lot of extras for the 10/22! I just put one in a 10 day! now i'm waiting to win the lottery to add to the collection!

Most likely pistol since I already have 3 rifles.

Are there any advantages of a bolt action on a .22 (or any caliber for that matter)?
