Ruger 10/22 - What type of bedding?

I'm in the planning stage of upgrading my stock 10/22. Beginning with the end in mind, I'd like to have a great shooter that can hit it's target up to 100 yards. Not looking for perfection, just would like an accurate and reliable shooter. I'll be adding a new Bell & Carlson Anschutz thumbhole stock and new 18" Green Mountain Bull barrel. Trying to figure out which type of bedding to facilitate increased accuracy. Pillar bed, bedding the first 1.5 to 3'' under the barrel, or Pillar bed and also bed first 1.5 to 3'' under the barrel? Glass bed the entire action?

Is this something that a not-so-skilled individual can complete? Or is this better left to a gunsmith?

From what I recall most folks who choose to bed do a pillar bed, and also bed the action block up to about the action balance point while letting the rest free float.
That's what I was going to do, but after I put new trigger, stock and barrel together I was getting occassional sub .5" groups at 50yds so I decided to let her be.

There are tons of discussions on bedding on rimfirecentral.com from simple to exotic. It seems a lot of them concur that pillar with a pressure pad is best. It takes some work if you build the pillar and plate yourself, but someone has a kit for it thats not to expensive. Check it out, basically it lets you tune the gun to the ammo vs finding the ammo that shoots best. There's alot of good ideas there.

When you get there, get some CCI green tag ammo and shoot your own bullet holes at 50y.

Has anyone actually done it?? Not just read about it..

I would give it a shot, but I need someone to pat me on the back and tell me everything is going to be ok! lol

I was concerned bout the same stuff when upgrading my 10/22, just put the gun together an take it shooting...my green mtn/hoague getup with a cheep 3-9 shoots btw .3" and .5" at 50yards so I wonder if i could even notice a diffrence with the bedding job...probly NOT! btw add the volkersen hammer for an awsome $35 trigger pull to help take advantage of the accuracy!

I practically have the same set-up as you, and am wondering if this is even worth pursuing.

I have the: Hogue stock, Green Mountain Barrel, PC Hammer, and 3-9 scope and I'm shooting .3" groups at 50 yards.

With that said, how much more can I expect with bedding the stock??

I used the standard jbweld in a bell and carolson stock with a green mountain barrel. I bedded the rear of the action , pillar bedded the front action where the take dowb screw is and the first 2" of the barrel. The rest of the barrel has a decent amount of freefloat. For a release agent I used shoe polish. For the pillar I used a 3/8 brass barb with a 5/8 base

I bedded the rear of the action , pillar bedded the front action where the take dowb screw is and the first 2" of the barrel. The rest of the barrel has a decent amount of freefloat. For a release agent I used shoe polish. For the pillar I used a male 3/8 brass barb with a 5/8 base. Just be shure to wipe away the excess squeeze out jbweld when it starts to skin. Oil will help you clean up the area. With federal bulk 36gr ammo from walmart shooting clover leafs or smaller at 25 yards without much effort. I also did a cz 452 with out standing results. Before bedding my cz accuracy was nothing to brag about using bulk ammo. At 50yrds I was able to hit a metal coat hanger with ease 3 or 4 times out of every 5 bullets.
