Do both!!! 10/22s are a blast to modify and the gun itself is not that expense. Figure out which you'll use the most and work on it well you're waiting for another gun. Best of both worlds. I'm not a tacticool lover so I have a lightweight bull barrel 10/22 on a Boyds Evolution stock. Trigger, bolt have been reworked and it has a Mueller scope. I love it because its accurate enough to punch paper from a bench yet light enough for general plinking and ammo is cheap. Was gonna build a dedicated bench gun and opted out cause of other interests, but you can't have to many 10/22s.

Precision shooting, that way you can use it for both long range and plinking.

            It also looks better...

As Townsend Whelen famously said "only accurate rifles are interesting" and that's my feeling in a nutshell. Any fool can send a brick or two of 22s downrange, but for me the fun and the challenge is to see just how tight I can make my 50m rimfire groups and 100m for my centerfire groups.

Point well taken. As i get older, I find the just blasting away at cans etc isn't as much fun as seeing how well I can do shooting at paper. Quality of the gun has become important. Maybe my last post was a little over the top suggesting both. I would have more fun with the precision rifle if I had to choose.

Just a note if you are going to precision shoot. Figure out how much it's going to cost to convert a 10/22 into a precision rifle then look at the cost of a good bolt precision rifle and decide. I have probably 600 bucks in addition work and addons to my $200 10/22 and I wouldn't consider it a precision rifle, as most precision rimfire shooter use bolt guns.

I have the Archangel G36 kit on my 10/22 that I attach a scope to occasionally. Put some golf balls out @ 50yds and keep hitting them past 100yds no problem. Best of both worlds, I guess. The kit does give it some weight. Feels a bit heavier than my ARs.

10/22s can be funny critters and sometimes vexing critters. Get into modding them if you dearly love modding them but I agree that there are cheaper choices like a $500 CZ453 Varmint that can shoot just about as well or a $1000 (and waaaaaay up from there) Anchutz that will out shoot them. I used to know a guy that made ridiculously tiny (~3/8" @ 50m) groups after swapping in a ~$120 Green Mountain barrel and a $300 Kidd 2-stage trigger. The secret was how well he did the work and what an awesome shot the guy was. One of mine is nearly as accurate as my Annie and a whole lot more fun to shoot.

Who makes the stock and barrel in the first picture? I like that a lot.
