    Picked up a H&K Umarex MP5 A5 - Range Report added

As the title says, I've got a fun new "tacticool" toy in gun jail. This will be my first "tacticool" firearm, and I'm looking forward to burning through bulk pack after bulk pack of ammo. I will not be mounting optics to it any time soon, if ever. I may keep it strictly as a iron-sight configuration... but the temptation of an inexpensive red-dot optic is already calling my name.

Anyone out there have one of these? Post up a photo! Have a review to share? Share it! I've read plenty of good things about 'em, and have spoken with a couple people who have shot 'em and enjoy 'em, so I've no doubt I made a decent selection. I am sure at least someone will say that I should have gotten the GSG MP5 instead.. but honestly, I just didn't like the way it felt in the hands, nor the weight/balance of it. It felt too much like a toy..

Anyway... as of April 5th... I'll be

You might consider keeping a golf tee and maybe a small pocketknife in your pocket to clear jams...

I've always got the necessary tools with me, and usually a few spares I may or may not need. (multi-tools are awesome to bring along, but I keep jewler's screwdrivers, allen keys, etc. with me also) I don't plan to be burning 500+ rounds every trip to the range... Probably more like a couple hundred. I have a good cleaning rod I bring as well. Thank you for the heads up though. (I learned the hard way when aguila casings started sticking in my Savage Mark II chamber)

Nice! Saw some great reviews online and it seems its better than the GSG.

That is what I've read as well... function wise and build-quality wise. I've not really gotten much in the way of a solid feel for what the trigger pull should be like, but I'm sure I'll find out soon enough. One thing I'm not especially fond of is the factory's indication that a complete disassembly of the firearm would void its warranty - it is designed to be field-stripped only. I like to really get into the inner-workings of my guns and clean/oil 'em as needed. (and polish up sear engagement points and the such)

To those of you who do own this firearm, how satisfied are you with the factory trigger settings? I've seen at least somewhere mention that it has an adjustable trigger.. but I have no idea within what range that might be?

Not many owners of these things on Calguns, eh? I suppose that means I'm pretty much obligated to post a range report. I'll get right on that, on April 6. :P

I've never shot one. They feel very solid though.

Let us know how it performs. I was going for the GSG version because it came with the top rails. Much like you I didn't feel like spending another $100 to buy MFI rails.

I just got mine on Monday! Love the H&K logo. The weight and feel is nice, however I never held a GSG to compare. Takedown is easy since there are 3 Pins. I havent shot it yet. The trigger is bit sticky, but what do you expect for a .22LR. Its totally Tacticool plinking toy. Have fun, shoot straight!

@ JackRydden224 - Yes, the H&K did feel pretty solid, much more so than the GSG. I did like the integral rail on the GSG, but for now I'm fully content with iron sights only. I believe there are a couple other alternatives beyond the UTG and the MFI rails... I'll get back to you on that one. I will make an effort to do a full range report in the days following picking up the rifle.

@ shamu415 - Awesome! Hope you get a chance to get it out to the range soon! I do like that the takedown is just a matter of a few pins, though I'm pondering how thoroughly I will be able to clean the upper receiver without an aerosol-type solvent. As far as the trigger... I have my expectations set pretty high.. but then, I've worked the trigger pull on my Savage Mark II BTVS down to ~1.25-1.5 lbs. I know that the trigger on the H&K will be no where near that... I've read things claiming anywhere between 6 and 8 lbs. I'd be much happier with a 3.5 lb trigger pull for a tactical rimfire, but 6 is acceptable. Perhaps I'll end up doing some work to reduce the trigger pull and smooth it up a bit. If I do, I'll post my results here.

I got mine a couple weeks ago. It is an absolute blast to shoot. I've got 1200 rds through it in 3 range trips. Mags are easy to load, reliability is great (better than my 10-22), and it is just plain fun. Back to reliability, I think I've had 3 times when the bolt didn't strip the ammo off the mag. Typically 2nd shot when changing from various ammo manufacturers. No jams or FTEs or any sort. Accuracy is very good; plinking with red dot is easy. The trigger is a bit heavy. I don't recall seeing anything about it being adjustable. The recoil spring is adjustable for standard vs high velocity ammo.

I got the Classic Army mount (airsoft) and Primary Arms microdot on it. I didn't want to spend a fortune on the red dot. That combo works well. My FFL had it and gave me a decent deal so I bought it as an impulse buy. That HK has been my best purchase in a long time.

Glad to hear it. I've got 2 magazines (well, I bought one spare, and it comes with one) and 700+ rounds worth of ammo to bring along to the range this Saturday. How does yours run with Federal Bulk Pack ammo? (the maroon red box) I don't remember where, but I thought I read something about it working fairly well in these things. I have some left over CCI Blazers, I'll bring some Mini-Mags, and probably a box of Stingers just for fun. :P

How's the optic mount holding up? This is the one you got, yes? http://www.airsoftarms.com/Classic-A...and-SAR-series

Have fun on Saturday. Mine has run fine with AutoMatch, then Blazer, then Federal bulk pack.

Mount is holding up fine. I don't think I got the exact one you listed. The names are the same but mine is a pretty small mount. I think it was 37.20 delivered including CA tax. The place is in CA so shipping is fast. http://www.zairsoft.com/servlet/the-...Profile/Detail I am only using the PA microdot so the mount is actually very large for the base area that I need.

My MP5's jail sentence is finally up, and she is free. Spent some time cleaning it and whatnot last night, looking forward to getting it out to the range on Saturday. Everything I have read has really got my expectations high, and I don't feel I will be let down.
