VERY simple, you should totally swap it out. I would advise an 18"... I like Green Mountain. E.R Shaw's are on the cheap side, and I heard their barrels are higher quality then they were before. Who knows though. Green Mountain is good!

Thanks guys. Do you have a recommendation for what barrel I should use? I want to just get a standard Hogue overmold rubber stock, heavy barrel of course, but haven't decided on a barrel.

The hogue is really light, I put a 20" heavy barrel on mine and it was very front heavy, great stock though. I'd recommend a tactical solutions barrel. They look great on the hogue stock and since they are aluminum the gun is very light overall. Very accurate and comfortable to carry/hold.

The tacsol is also a .920 profile like the heavy barrel, functions like a heavy barrel, just isn't heavy.

its insanely easy to do.

-remove the screw from the bottom of the stock

-depress the safety half way and pull the receiver and barrel off of the stock

-unscrew the 2 screws in the v block and take the vblock off

-pull the barrel out



to install-

-freeze the barrel for 15mins

-heat the receiver with a hair dryer so its almost too hot to handle

-lube the joining areas

-put the new barrel in the receiver and put the gun back together



it takes about 20 mins including the 15 min freeze time

what???? never done that on any 10/22 ive helped build. all of them have had the barrels slip in, some were tight and needed some elbow grease and a light tap from a mallet.

Freezing and heating just made it very easy, I didn't even need to line the barrel up because I could just turn it once it was in there, 20 mins at room temp and I couldn't pull the barrel out by hand.

For you 10/22'ers, how difficult is it to replace the barrel with a heavy barrel and stock? I really want one and I've been holding off buying a standard 10/22 until I figure out exactly what it takes to swap the barrel.

Depends on your budget. Green Mountain are good, but I really love my Kidd Barrel. My friend has a Butler Creek barrel and my Kidd puts it to shame. Easily same hole at 50 yards and touching or same hole at 75 yards.
