10/22 Beding vs. free float

The receiver of the 10-22 is aluminum. therefore it has inherent flex in it that the thicker steel Volquartsen receiver does not. Especially when you install a HEAVY match barrel, while the V-Block connection is very secure you're pushing the design of the receiver, which was made to work with the light standard barrel. On Ojisan's Thompson's kits, for example, the barrels are completely free floating --

But I have more confidence in them because the original Ruger receiver is bolted into a steel housing. If I was looking for match accuracy, i would upgrade the barrel AND the receiver.
Also, the aluminum of these Ruger's receivers is pretty soft -- see how easily you can strip the threads in the top mount rail they include. The barrel is much stronger, and we used to bolt the scope to the BARREL --

And just leave the receiver hanging there to hold the fire control group.Comment

If memory serves MOA used to be willing to thread their stainless receiver and a thread a barrel to match. In reality barrel/receiver fit is the least of your accuracy worries. You can either go with a lightweight THM barrel or support the weight of the barrel with an adjustable v-block and be just as accurate. The real problems start with the single takedown screw design which allows the receiver to shift in the stock. You also have to deal with the poor stock to receiver fit which makes shifting even worse. Finally you variations cased by inconsistent torquing of the takedown screw.Last edited by sholling; 12-31-2011, 6:03 PM."Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else." --FREDERIC BASTIAT--

So I'll admit, my Ruger is threaded, with a 20" GM stainless barrel tapered barrel so that I can use in hunter category silhouette. Extractor groove was recut, and bolt face was ground and squared to .0425" LR rim headspace depth. Using the razor platform my scope mount is integral to the receiver, and receiver is unquestionably integral with the barrel. While slop in the stock might be irritating, what I'm aiming at is what I'm shooting at, should be true to POA. Additionally e fit on the stock I am using is so tight I almost don't need the single tang...."Cum catapultae proscriptae erunt tum soli proscripti catapultas habebunt."

If you wanted a stock with both free float and bedding what stock would you recommend?"License to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. Man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit -- ever. They're like the Viet Cong. Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower. And that's all she wrote." --Carl Spackler--Originally posted by skateboarder74"It is better to have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it." ---Clarence Worley ...Comment
