    10/22s comedy of errors.

I have had two 10/22 barreled actions sitting in the back of my safe for years. One day I'm reading this forum and decide a tacticool tack driver 10/22 would be fun.

Sooo, I see a stock a buddy has that I really like. A Butler Creek stock with a built in Bi Pod. Of course they don't make those anymore. Much searching later I find a NIB one on Gunbroker. Of course, No Sales to Ca. Send a polite email and they agree to let me bid. I win the stock. $98.00

I read the directions when it arrives and I need a stock screw. With the help of members here. I find one. $3.00

In the meantime AIM sends me their email ad and there is a kevlar stressed 10/22 barrel on sale. I jump on it and it's on it's way. $199.00 (The point of the prices will be clear shortly.)

So today armed with my new screw I attempt to test fit the action with the old barrel attached and this is where it all goes wrong.

Both of my old barreled actions have large rivet heads on the pins that hold the receiver together. Thus they won't fit in the new stock.

So I'm $300 in and it's a no go unless I buy a newer rifle or receiver.

I'm going to go assemble a Martini. At least I know I have everything to make a cocktail.

Ca you throw up a pic?

I love 10/22's but don't know anything about the rivet heads.....ie, I don't know if that's an old version or something. Every 10/22 I own, have owned, or have seen has simple knockdown pins that usually FALL OUT.

You may want to check into drilling out those rivet headed pins and maybe replacing with the regular pins. I'm wondering if some past owners riveted the trigger guard and receiver together cuz he was sick of the pins falling out.

Please don't give up, I'm sure you'll be ableto get this project done! Let us know.

I have original pins available if needed, or you can get them from Ruger.

These barreled actions were out of one of those two rifles racked together on a tri pod with a crank handle things. Maybe because of that it has those odd pins.

Tomorrow I'm going to see if the pins will tap out. BTW, Glad you guys know to just replace the pins.

I'm not truly frustrated. More amused in a resigned to Murphey's law in action when you least expect it kind of way.

I don't want to sound corny but thank you very much to those that offered their own pins to me. It's very generous of you.

i bet i can guess why it didnt have a stock on it.

10/22's have never had any rivets. whoever did that was misguided.... Try to take them out and get the correct pins.

the pins you have now came from a old gatling kit .. http://www.gatlinguns.net/docs/Assem...structions.pdf

No problem, by the time this cluster phooey ends and the gun is done. I'll be posting pics everywhere.

If the crank pulls the trigger more than once per turn. I'm pretty sure that's a no go in Cali. I had a BMF Activator when I was a youngin that's no longer ok.

And the hits just keep on coming

Stopped by the gunstore and no pins today.

So there I was sitting at home with my new stock, barrel and my stock unmolested 10/22 minding it's own business...

Brilliant idea! Borrow the receiver off the complete rifle and all is good.

Here's where it all went wrong.

Took the rifle apart and tried to install the new barrel. Does not fit. Goes almost all the way in but not quite. Appears to be too thick. Won't come back out either.

And a little cherry on top is that the stock is not for bull barreled rifles. No real problem as I have more barreled actions that I do stocks but all the same...

So now there is a pile of barreled and semi barreled 10/22s in the toy room. I'll give it all another look when I'm less frustrated.

Sometimes the bull barrels are a little oversize where they go into the receiver.
Polish the barrel shank a bit with a strip of crocus cloth, check fit, polish some more until it just barely goes in.
