Been meaning to check out appleseed but they never seem to have the intro class. i doubt i'm ready to start competing or trying to qualify. what's the best way to get started with them? Just dive in?

I highly recommend this program to anyone!

Yes this rifle is limited to 10 round magazines in California.

Appleseed is not about competing. It is a fun and educational marksmanship class that will help you become a better shooter (and it's kid friendly too!)

      Where are you located?

The Appleseed volunteers at Corona are a great group. You could show up with a Ruger 10/22 that had never been taken out of the box and have a great experience.

You could have an even better experience if you add techsights (or a low power scope) and a sling stud on the forearm of the stock (I use the Uncle Mikes 1.25" sling swivel mounts which work great with the military web sling which is available from the Appleseed Store).

Use this sling and NOTHING else. I thought that I could use a 1" leather military sling instead. Nope. Bought the recommended and never looked back.

+1 on Appleseed! I thought I was a decent shot before I went...nope. I can't wait for the next one!

I notice alot of people on here say they had trigger work done to their 10/22s. How is the stock trigger?

I liked how it broke, but it was heavy, long, and had a lot of creep

Usually about 7-8 LBS. They are awful from the factory. I put a VQ hammer in mine and its freakin sweet.

Stock trigger is poor but minor work makes it acceptable. The instructions are found at rimfirecentral.com in a stickey in the Ruger section.

I also do a small mod to change the bolt lock to an auto release instead of messing with the silly lever. (5 minutes with a small file, instructions at the same location as above)

Appleseed is well worth your time even if you can just do the Saturday.

Welcome to the wonderful world of rimfires. Great first choice and I bet not your last. A nice bolt action will complement that semi sometime down the road. You and yours have fun with it.

Big 5 has the 10/22 for $230 right now iirc, and if you're in SoCal I hear turners puts them up for $200 pretty frequently.

Black Friday would probably be a good day to look for one.

Before my VQ hammer I could hold the rifle and scope up by the trigger without it firing (unloaded). Now it is smooth and crisp.

                                congrats!!
I got a 10/22 tactical with the synthetic stock also but then I went to a Hogue stock. Kinda made me wish I would of got the cheaper 10/22, since I changed the barrel and stock anyway. All I got to say is happy modding. Next up is the auto bolt release (I wish they would come like this from the factory) and maybe a extended mag release.
