How accurate is a Ruger 1022?

I am a brand new 22lr rifle owner/shooter. I know next to nothing about 22 rifles. Are they pretty accurate? In particular, is an out of the box Ruger 1022 accurate? I'm wondering if i'd be foolish to buy a red dot or a magnifying scope for this rifle. Thanks in advance for your advice.

btw, this is what i just bought.

At 50 yards out of the box you could easily shoot a 1.5 inch group with bulk ammo. The gun is more accurate than people give it credit for, and it is more accurate than the majority of its users.

Out of the box they are nothing to write home about. A 1.5" group at 50 is 3 MOA. Thats a built-in miss at pig or turkey silhouettes.

Short of competition, it will be more accurate then you most of your life. A scope will definatly help YOUR accuracy, the rifles remains the same, no mater what sites are mounted on it.

1.5 inch group at 50 yards is good for fun at the range and capable of hitting critters at a reasonable distance. The gun is fine but my mentality is different; I am not impressed when someone modifies their rifle to shoot expensive .22lr ammo only and can keyhole rounds at 25 yards. Everyone is different but I assume since he is new to 10/22's he wasn't going to build a $2,000 ultimate rifle to use as a bench clamped gun.

Not as accurate as a Marlin 60 out of the box. That is why there are tons of parts for it

probably more accurate than the ammo it shoots will allow, but i guess we'll never know!!!

I know that my Mossberg 702 outshoots my buddy's 10/22, but some calgunners have posted targets proving their 10/22's outshoot my 702....

no. not trying to win any contests. this gun has 1 primary purpose and two secondary purposes.

primary purpose: something i can hand to my sons so they can learn how to safely operate a firearm

secondary #1: cheap fun. for desert trips, i can burn through 50 bucks of .223 in an hour easy. i'd like to trim that dollar figure down while not sitting there watching everybody else shoot.

secondary #2: if the world really does come to an end and we're struggling to survive, having a rifle that uses the most prolific caliber in the US that will be good for small game hunting sounds like a good idea to me.

On another note: since this is a rimfire, is it still limited to 10 round mags?

sounds like it's accurate enough for small game hunting and for my sons to learn how to shoot.

Actually, my stock 10/22 hits real rabbits at 25, 50, 75 yards on a regular basis. I dont care if the gun shoots "minute-of-beer can," I fill my table with small game no problem.

Plus, my 10 year old loves it.

that's probably accurate enough for me. Rabbit at 75 yards. Nice shooting.

I have that same rifle with a 3-9 scope on it and can shoot a little over 1 moa at 50 yards with bulk ammo and an upgraded trigger. It's a great little rifle. Some mods make the gun easier to manipulate, like the "pull back to release bolt" option.
