Subsonic .22

Anybody have much experience with this. Is the report much quieter than normal ammo? I need to do some gopher removal

its not that much quieter. If you could be heard by neighbors with high velocity .22 they will hear you with subsonic too. CB caps are what you are looking for. Turns your 22 into a pellet gun.

Get cci cb longs. They wont cycle but they are the quietest rounds I've used. The "subsonic" usual rounds will still have the initial crack. The cb longs are propelled by primer only and sound as loud as my pellet gun.

Super colibris have been my gopher medicine. Like a capgun out of a single six, like a redryder out of a boltgun.

Super Colibri's in a 16" barrel bolt gun sound like snapping a rubberband.

I tried 60 grain Sniper Sub-Sonic in a 27" bolt gun and it was pretty quiet while still making it all the way out (Aguilla does not recommend them in long barrels).

No matter how loud it is, if there is a law agains discharge of firearms in your area, don't do it. You don't want to get arrested because you have a nosy neighbor.

There can be laws against firing pellet rifles too so make sure you stay legal.

Subsonic's, unsuppressed, are still fairly loud. For that matter, a decent pellet gun in a densely built area in the burbs is plenty to get neighbors attention.

As stated above, make sure it's legal in the first place - many places have laws against discharging a firearm within city limits or within x distance from a maintained road....and air guns are usually considered firearms within the context of these laws.

.22 short works? i know it wont cycle correctly in self loading guns.

use CBs on larger things like squirrels rabbits, etc. use super colibris on tiny things like gophers mice and birds. Beware, that the super colibris are very low power and if I haven't cleaned my barrel recently, they will get stuck in the barrel.(16" barrel). CB's either long or short, while sounding like an airgun, are in fact much more powerful than an air gun. CBs do indeed use powder and I think they are supposed to be like 760 FPS.

For gophers at the farm I worked at, I always thought that a derringer loaded with super colibri would be perfect. When you see the gopher, walk up behind his hole quietly, wait for him to pop out his head as he is excavating dirt, and SNAP! Anybody watching wouldn't even know what you were doing.

CB's are Sub-Sonic: 29 Grain, 710FPS
Aguila Super Colibri: 20gr, 500FPS
Aguila Colibri: 20gr, 375FPS

The bullets on the Colibri are shorter than the CCI CB's. None of this stuff cycles in a semi-auto. Depending on the magazine the CB's might work better -- for example, in a 10/22 the Colibri rounds can be problematic. CB's, with their slighty larger bullet are more forgiving. When shooting from a revolver the CB's will be louder. I can't tell much of a difference from a long gun but my hearing has not been too good lately.
