Merc, should the strut be resting on the cap as I swing the mainspring housing downwards? I tried popping it out and having the strut go the other direction and I couldn't move it at all. I'm sure this is way less complicated than I'm making it out to be
I don't understand what cap you think it needs to be resting on.

Did you find the hole in the mainspring housing I was referring to? In image 2 of yours, you should see the strut hanging like the thing in the back of your throat. If you hold the gun normally, as in pointing the barrel somewhere like you're going to shoot it, the strut should be hanging down, not held up.

It should be visible like this image:

I'm in Torrance too, and just got back my lower from Doug Stout and am trying to put the 22/45 back together. Just getting the barrel back on the lower is making me nervous due to how tight it is, getting it off the lower required a plastic/rubber mallet and then it kind of shot off. Seems like the upper/lower need to be broken in by putting them together a few thousand times as well as the main spring housing pin / frame holes. I'm taking it home after work to practice with a rubber mallet. I saw one guy on you tube put his upper on the lower with his bare hands!!!!!

The reason I posted this video is because I watched the video above and for the issue you're having you just need clearer instruction. Also the gentleman in the video in the post above does not use a magazine. Oddly enough reassembly is seemless when the magazine is incorporated into the process as ruger intended it to be. Hope you enjoy your new 22/45 and good luck

+1 to this video. This is the one I found to be the most useful when doing a full teardown of the Ruger. Now I usually just give it a boresnake cleaning.

I used this video and it worked for me, before that I was ready to take it back to the dealer for something else.

I practiced disassembly / reassembly while watching the tube a couple of nights and now its a snap.

With reference to the above picture, I can see that there is some "wear" immediately adjacent to the silver colored "cup" that it should be going into. At rimfire central one guy suggested that my latch assembly was not in enough - could this be why the strut is not mating properly with the "cup" ?

Could be, mine takes a pretty good tap to get the pin up there.

If the pistol is new with only a few rounds through it it will be tight. The last video is right on, similar to MKII but the have no mag safety.
                  Good Luck.

Finally got it done! It was actually the sear...had to be rotated forward and held. Thanks all

Well then you obviously found out how to push the "cheese" (sear)forward so everything lines up for closure. I use a pencil and after a few times you will have it down. It is all worth the effort. I have 4 Ruger pistols and kids so I get a lot of practice. I am an expert with disk brake cleaner!

Never had to mess with the sear in my MKIIs. Is this something that HAS to be done on all the MKIIIs?? Or is this an odd issue with your pistol? From what I gather in the video of the MK3, with the mag inserted and holding the trigger back, this should have pushed the sear for you right??

I had missed Step 5 under "22/45 Mark III Detailed Stripping Reassembly Procedures".

It isn't the sear he is pushing forward, it is the hammer. You can't push the sear forward since it only rotates up or down and you can't get to it from the MSH.

This sounds like it should have let the sear move out of the way of the hammer and let the hammer go forward into the fired position as you swiveled the mainspring housing into place.....assuming you were pointing it up and pulling the trigger then while holding the trigger back, swiveling the mainspring housing shut.

The sear needs to be rotated up and held there in place by the safety lever. My original error was that I had not rotated the sear up before putting it all together. So the sear was rotated down and jamming up the msh from being inserted all the way
