    Ruger 22/45 Project

So I have a Mk III 22/45. It was my first handgun and is the cause of my gun habit now. I love this gun a lot but lately it has been neglected by me. I really would like to take up a project and get it running better than ever and make it once again my favorite gun. I had some ideas and a few products but I'd like to hear the opinions and first hand experience from others to see if these are good ideas or really worth it.

First off, I'd like a new trigger system. Now I'm not going to be competing with this gun and the stock trigger isn't horrible but I'd like something more responsive and just better. I've seen the Volquartsen Accurizing Kit and have seen many good reviews for it. Is this a worthwhile kit? And although I can detail strip and fix 1911s and my AR I've never fiddled with a 22/45s internals. Will that be too difficult or should it be easy to grasp and install? Here's the kit in question... Volquartsen Accurizing Kit

Second, I need to get rid of the magazine disconnect. I hate it. I hate that mags don't fall free either and I've read the by replacing the Mk III bushing with a Mk II bushing I can get rid of this issue. Can someone confirm this and let me know how to accomplish this?

Third, and this is the least important, I was thinking about putting on a Majestic Arms Speed Strip Kit. Not that disassembly and reassembly are so unbelievably hard, cause it's not, but I like the idea of the simpler strip. Less to worry about and just makes cleaning that much faster. I've also read that if I buy this version...Speed Strip Kit that it will get rid of the mag disconnect. I thought I read somewhere else though that this kit with the Volquartsen kit is slightly different and I may have to adjust things during reassembly.

Regardless of what I do, I'd like for the first two to happen for sure so if anyone has any experience and can lend me some info on how to do this I would surely appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I replaced the bushing with a vq mk ii bushing, works great. I just followed a tutorial I found online. As far as accurizing Ive heard the vq sear works wonders by itself.

Consider doing the slingshot mod while you have it apart also.

Thanks Tea Rollin. I've never seen that mod but it's so simple I'll have to do that as well. Replacing the bushing alone disables the mag disconnect or is there anything else you need? I think if I do trigger work that I will get the whole vq kit. I'm not a huge fan of the actual trigger.

Sort of unrelated, but is the MKIII 22/45 a metal bodied gun or is it plastic? I've heard the 22/45 has a plastic frame, and the MKIII was metal. So is the 22/45 and the MKIII 22/45 the same thing? sorry to hijack.

The MKIII is the metal frame luger stype grip angle model.

The MKIII 22/45 is the plastic frame 1911 grip angle model.

There are MKII versions of each. The 22/45 is the MK III 22/45.

Some people add a washer but I only used a mk ii bushing and it worked fine for me.

before you spend any money read this post.

the guy does great work for a cheap price. no need for FFL as it's just the grip.

the speed strip is a waste of money. once you have the mkll internals takedown is much easier.

Thanks for the tip but I'd really like to do it myself. I like working on guns myself. Also, how exactly does putting MkII internals in make it easier to disassemble/reassemble? Seems to me it would be practically the same.

Removes the magazine disconnect "feature" so you don't need to keep inserting the magazine to strip and re-assemble it.

Oh. Yeah I realized that with the MkII bushing that it would disable the mag disconnect. Honestly inserting the mag for disassembly and reassembly isn't that much easier but I understand what you mean. If I did my research correctly the VQ MkII Accurizing Kit doesn't come with the MkII bushing. I'll have to get both.

Donny. Could you send a pic of what these washers look like or how to make or get them? I saw you posted about them in that thread.

Don't waste your money on the accurizing kit. The two pieces that make a difference are the sear and trigger.

I suggest heading over to rimfirecentral.com they have a dedicated 22/45 section with a ton of info.
