    New survival rifles / WTH?

Any recommendations on a packable 22lr/22 hornet rifle, preferably one that has a second barrel for .410 cartridges?

Just found out Springfield doesn't make the rifle I've wanted since I was a kid anymore. Going for $500-$800 on gunbroker used now.

I guess in a pinch I could just break my AR in two, but there's just no competing with the cost and weight of .22.

Maybe a pistol with a long barrel and a scope?

not sure if its "packable" but rossi makes a single shot rifle that shares barrels in 22lr, shotgun, and .243 I believe.

Look for the older savage 24 over under combo guns (lighter than the new model which is still made). They come in 22LR (or 22Mag) on top and a shotgun below in 20 gauge (or .410) weight is about 7 LBs There is also a short camper model that is 6 lbs. I have several >the rifles are usually quite accurate. Good luck

What do you think about this?

8 round magazines, collapses into its own waterproof stock.

I was thinking along the same lines of a .22lr pistol- the S&W22a is on sale for a pretty good deal right now but from what some on here are saying it is very uncomfortable-affecting accuracy.

I have an AR-7. Don't think I've ever had a jam. The stock is a bit wide though. But it shoots straight. Nice gun.

Oh, don't screw the barrel in like that guy, when you go to tighten it down, pull the bolt back while tightening so you can make sure it's tightened properly.

not a .22 but its a 45 long colt that can use .410 shot shells as well, i think it would make a good survival weapon

Have they improved since Henry took them over? I had an AR-7 made by Charter Arms about 30 years ago and it jammed constantly. I tried various ammo, bought new mags, etc., but nothing helped.

I ended up giving it away.

Marlin makes their Model 39 which is a .22 levegun that takes down. It's a bit on the long side. However, Marlin made seveal Model 39 variations with shorter barrels. This one is a Centenial Model with a 20" barrel.

And, although not particularly light, by comparison to the AR-7 (shown for size comparison) my old Mossbeg 500 in .410 is much more capable. Current 500's in .410 could be modified to make it fairly quick to takedown and reassemble as I have with mine.

As a little side note, I carried the AR-7 in my Jeep for decades. But I decided a bit more horsepower would be good, so I turned my old Mossberg into "The Perfect Jeep Gun".

                              Dutch3,

So sorry your AR7 gave you so much grief. Mine has been pretty good for a survival rifle. I'm betting your rifle needed a good cleaning. A couple of times I took my side plate off and lubed it lightly. In your case I'm betting the bolt face and chamber were dirty. That's all. Remember it's a survival rifle and not meant to be shot on a weekend outing.

If I see the Henry version I'd pick one up in a heart beat. It's your main pal in your back pack other than a good CB radio or cell phone.
