I bought my 10/22 in the early 90's at a pawn shop and it looked like it was never cleaned. Forward to this year when I cleaned it for the first time. I just kept putting oil in it and it kept firing. Youtube helped me completely break it down and clean it. If you already have an AR, check out the .22 uppers. I have one and it's surprisingly accurate.

Yes, my only issue with the 795 is the synthetic stock. You can get a Model 60 stock and customize it for the 795. I have seen several postings by people who have made the change. I looks as simple as cutting hole for the magazine and, if interested, patching the hold on the foregrib from the prior tube feed. Other than that, the 795 could stand to be a bit longer. I am not sure if the Model 60 stock increases the overall length or not.

The trigger pull from the factory is somewhere arourd 1 Ton, maybe 1.5 Tons, so you will need to do a search for the 795 DIY trigger job and it mkes a world of difference and only takes about an hour or so.

I want to add this comment in response to this comment in your original post, "Next I built a fairly nice (expensive) AR to attempt to fill the void. I chose the platform for the advantages the AR platform offers. I failed to take into account the legal liabilities and again this isn't a rifle I can use casually. If I lived in another state my search would be over, I love this rifle."

It sound like you love your AR and the experience with it but are leary of the legal ramifications. If that is your only issue with the M&P15-22, remember that it is 22LR rimfire and can not be classified in the AW group... ever. I am telling you it is the best choice of the rifles of any 22 I have ever fired, and believe me, that is saying a LOT.

Only one poster mentioned Henry lever (H001). It's fun to shoot, 16 rounds in the barrel, and I can hit a target (with my old eyes) at 50 yards very easily. My kids love it, not too long not too short. Also have a bolt action marlin, I believe is a 925. Both rifles are very easy to clean and low maintenance.

I've had many .22's over the last 40 years, but will keep my Browning T-bolt until the end.

Accurate with just about any ammo...even Stingers and Yellow Jackets... and will repeatedly hit, with easily called shots, a soda can at 200yds with Mini-Mags.

Beautiful bit of wood, deep glossy bluing, fully adjustable trigger, flawless 10 round flush magazine, and near perfect balance for long carries in the squirrel fields.

An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself...A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."......Cicero

How does the bolt action work on that? It looks like you just pull it backwards.

                Beautiful rifle.

Just go into a decent shop and look at the used rack. You'll probably find a jem hiding there. I've found more than a few high quality .22s real cheap. I'd never pass up an old Mossberg 40 series rifle. I paid $75 for a 42A years ago and built it into a silloutte rifle. My first match, I ran my first seven turkeys with it. It has always held it's own against Walthers, Anshultzes, Kimbers, etc. I also found a Mossber 44US for $125, Remington 521 Junior, with Lyman peep sights, for $67, Springfield M6 for $85 and the list goes on. Or, keep looking for a used gun on this forum. Last year, I found a like new 1980's 10-22 for $150. If you're not aware, the older 10-22s were made a lot better than the crap they are putting out now. I'd never buy a 10-22 today and leave it stock. Anyway, find something that fits you properly, is priced within your budget and does what you want it to do.

I vote for the 10/22. It's reliable, looks like a sporting rifle (thus not "threatening" to the antis unless you add an aftermarket body kit), has options galore, and is actually pretty accurate out of the box. It does a good job for me with the cheap Wal-Mart bulk-packs. The rotary 10-round magazine is easy to load and very reliable. Fun factor is way up there.

Not that other .22LR rifles won't get the job done. They will.

Yes, quick pull straight back, slam it forward for 10 rounds. Much faster than a standard bolt. The locking lugs are two cams that engage their own recesses in the receiver (you can see the round head of the right lug, just ahead of the handle), and lock up like a vault. The bolt handle does NOT act as an additional lug, as it is not needed.

That's the beauty of the T-bolt design....and a pretty piece of wood doesn't hurt

Welp, I'm being pulled in a million different directions now.

Actually its a good thing. When I go out looking around for what is available I will be able to zero in on certain rifles.

Guys I think my brain is full. Thank you very much!

get a good .22 lr conversion kit for the AR.

if it's accuracy you're seeking, CZ is definitely worth the time, effort and cost. my 452 is a near tack-driver right out of the box; able to shoot "four-leaf clover" groups with little to no effort.

So many good choices, but another vote for the CZ. Have a CZ 452 Varmint with the heavy, shorter barrel and a cheapish Mueller scope. My 11 year old son does dime size, 10 shots groups at 25 yards from a rest. I am sure it is capable of more. 5 for 5 this afternoon on ground squirrels in the concrete pile. With subsonic ammo it also not too loud.
